During the reign of Josef Stalin, essentially unfettered mass shootings, labor camps, forced exile and deliberate famine killed so many people in the Soviet Union that the death toll was just stunning—43 to 60 million plus may not be far from the truth. If Stalin had just lived two years longer, we could have added several million more—Stalin was just starting another major purge at the time of his death.

Stalin was just starting another major purge at the time of his death.

Beria caught wind of it, and poisoned Stalin, allegedly, he told the rest of the Politburo, which was going to be purged, along with Beria himself, "I saved all of you."
