HOLY WEEK AND EASTER

Last year I went through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s opera “Jesus Christ Superstar”, laying out his genius at using the basic building blocks of opera. I took a look at Gustav Mahler’s “Resurrection” Symphony, a 90 minute behemoth that is nothing less than an entire theology expressed in music.

This year, I’m going to do something different.

In 1786, Franz Joseph Haydn wrote a devotional meditation centered on the last words attributed to Christ. It was originally written for string quartet, a medium that Haydn himself invented. This is a 75 minute piece best absorbed when at prayer. Set it aside for the proper time.

Haydn: “The Seven Last Words of Christ”

My sound is still messed up but... 75 minutes is more than a ‘piece’! lol
