MOSCOW -- President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia emphasized on Thursday that the upper chamber of the Russian Parliament had authorized him to use military force if necessary in eastern Ukraine, and also stressed Russia's historical claim to the territory, repeatedly referring to it as "new Russia" and saying that only "God knows" why it became part of Ukraine.

Speaking in a televised question-and-answer show, Mr. Putin also admitted for the first time that Russian armed forces had been deployed in Crimea, the disputed peninsula that Russia annexed last month immediately after a large majority of the population voted in a referendum to secede from Ukraine.

The Hitler comparisons are just flat out wrong.

Disagree. A number of Hitler's territorial land grabs were justified by saying that he was protecting ethnic Germans.

You really think Hitler was the first one who did things to protect an ethnic population?

Of course not, but comparing Putin to Hitler in this regard is relevant. It is also recent European history, which many can relate to in Europe. They have seen this play out in their lifetime.

S#!t's getting serious, and dangerous.

We have a foreign policy team (Obama, Kerry, and Power) who never grew in philosophy or wisdom beyond their mid-twenties.

These people have lived in academia, book writing, or non-executive politics. Obama, despite 5-1/2 years as POTUS, has not grown in his ability as Chief Executive, Chief Diplomat, or Commander in Chief. He still operates as he did in the U.S. Senate and the Illinois Senate--deferring the lead to others, and not leading himself.

Obama, Kerry, and Power will treat this as an academic exercise, like a term paper or essay exam in a Poly-Sci 502 class.

Strangely enough, I think Susan Rice has the potential to have the most mature thought on foreign policy, having worked in the think tank industry for a while, but as part of the Obama Administration, she has proven to be nothing more than a hack.

The result of all of this is the U.S. will cede a significant amount of power and influence to Putin.

Like I said when he took Crimea, it does no good to have a warm water port if you don’t have a land route to get there. You just need to look at a map to know he wasn’t done.

“we have our own little tin plated dictator...lets deal with him and let Vlad the Impaler do what he does....”

Perfectly said.

Can Bibi Netanyahu implement the Putin Standard and recreate the Greater Israel of the Torah?

Now there's an idea! Unfortunately, Bibi has neither the 'ovnayim nor the inclination.

The FR “Russian Bund” should jump right on this. Doesn’t matter that the people there are mostly Ukrainian. It’s for their own good that they will be put in camps. Putin is righting history.

Putin will justify invading Kiev and the Western parts of Ukraine by saying that those territories were part of the Soviet Union and that Russian/Soviet blood was spilled liberating them from the Nazis.

He'll be dealing with Polish soldiers then.

No Russia did it in WWI.

It should be noted Putin stressed again the use of force in Ukraine would be a very last resort. Obviously, all legal and diplomatic means to attain a political solution would have to be exhausted first. But its significant Russia is not closing off that option.

And what political solution would that be? Annexing eastern Ukraine? That is a "political" solution?

That's a political solution just as much as getting another person's wallet by holding a gun to their head.

OK don’t use Hitler. Stalin does nicely. And today his partner will be China instead of Japan. People better wake up because the next war is going to be nuclear. Or surrender.

Comparisons are fine he needs to be stopped now before it’s too late. And the big strike will probably come in the Pacific like last time.

These types play for keeps they will not hesitate to destroy America just because the liberals and most Americans think it’s unthinkable.

I’m thinking that maybe the best deal for Putin isn’t in annexing much more, if any, of what’s left of Ukraine. He’s already gotten the most important part.
