As an American military dependent growing up in Germany in the 1960's I can say our reception was very warm.

When introduced to other German families we were introduced as "My Americans"

Every German teen girl wanted and American boyfriend.

Finally and best of all were the beaches at the river at Hamburg and drinking beer legally at 16.

Kamikazes were the Japanese version of the guided cruise missile. I did an airshow at the min base in Japan that the Kamikazes flew from during the Okinawan campaign. They had a restored Zero pulled out of Tokyo bay. It’s one of the few remaining ones from the war.It is flyable but is kept on static display only.

Towards the end Japan was out of experienced pilots so this was a last ditch effort. Escorts had enough gar for a round trip and the only ones with ammo for their machine guns. Chicken out and you were shot down anyway.

I was in Japan when they started telling them about the whole war. It seems like they started their history of the war sometime in 1942. They completely left out the Pearl Harbor attack.

No, you said “so what.” Which explains your casual attitude.

You can continue to be you but I will continue respect those men who died. I know that it is a cliché, but those men had families, lives, girl friends, wives, children. They are (or were) real people.

The sad truth is that their remains were never interred and are still trapped in the hull of the Arizona just 30 feet below the memorial. It is a graveyard; a cemetery. Few people realize this and therefor probably don't give it the respect that it is due.

I have been to several Civil War battlefields, Gettysburg, Arlington, etc. But none of those monuments to war and death are as striking as the Arizona memorial.

Lets hope that folks continue to respect and value our service people. Most importantly when all of the remaining warriors from WWII have passed on and the only records that remain are what is written in a history text book.
