“Wonder if some folks were feeding the bears since they usually try to avoid people. “
I’m sandwiched between federal and state forests. The bears hide out there during the day and then raid garbage cans at night. There’s no such thing as a bear-proof garbage can. (Well, I suppose if you could buy a surplus tank that would work.) I don’t know of anybody who voluntarily feeds them. The cat always tells me when one is around. (Sweetie? Why are you under the bed?)

No! Bad Teddy! Mauling is not cool.

I knew Georgia had bears in the mountains. My ex-girlfriend lives in the burbs, and occasionally Yogi wanders past Gainesville (GA).
The local paper down there had a bear accident make front page news on one of the days I visited.

My sister lives in Navarre, Fl. Her neighborhood backs up to a wooded area and there is a black bear that lives in there that is constantly getting into trash cans.

I live in the Atlanta suburbs, about half-way between Atlanta and Athens.
A (small) black bear was hit in traffic on I-85 near here
a few years back and it caused all kinds of uproar.
(the enviro whacko’s were weapin’ and wailin’
and gnashing their teeth)
They were more worried about the fate of the bear
than that of the injured humans.

Is this one of those times where they try to find the offending bear and kill it or relocate it? I hope they don’t have to kill it. People who live in this area should already know they are near bear habitats, unless the bears have just began to spread out. That’s possible if the area is in a drought.

Racist reporters! Couldn’t they have just said they were all dressed in dark fur coats?

I keep bees. The disaster that one bear can bring to my bee yard is beyond description. It's not the honey they like. It's the bee larvae. Then the worst part is the bear can't see anymore from being stung in the face so bad it's eyes are swollen shut. Every 12 hours or so it keeps coming back until all your hives are torn to shreds. A $20,000 loss in a few hours.
30-06 and a back hoe. Three months of rain to wash all the dirt and wax mixed honey into the soil.

Grizzly Addams would have a few things to say about this. If Haggerty was still on coke he'd of taken ALL the bears on at the same time!
