Deal reached; BLM will release confiscated cattle to rancher

LAS VEGAS --  A deal has been reached between Bundy family leaders and the BLM, but not without some very tense moments.

Armed Bundy family leaders met with BLM officers Saturday afternoon in Mesquite to discuss the fate of the Bundy's cattle that the feds removed from BLM land, over the past week. The cattle are being held at a holding area in Mesquite.

Prior to the meeting, hundreds of protesters, some armed, tried storming the BLM's cattle gate, but weren't successful. The crowd was urged to wait 30 minutes and give both sides a chance to talk. An agreement was reached that the cattle will be released to the Bundy family later Saturday.

At one point, I-15 was closed in both directions, about seven miles south of Mesquite, because protesters had blocked the freeway. Nearly two dozen police officers and a SWAT unit were at the scene to keep the peace and assist the BLM enforcement officers to safely leave the area.

Protesters have been gathering all week in support of rancher Cliven Bundy, who has been locked in a legal battle for the past 20 years over grazing rights with the federal government

You have to wonder how high this went.

I can imagine terse phone calls between Reid and Obama.

Bundy better have armed people around him at all times from now until the end. Fedgov will take him out otherwise.

What? Confiscated private property that doesn’t require a billion forms, six court dates and eight delays?

To me, this seems like a clear demonstration of how armed citizens no longer have to act like surfs going before the king in the hopes that he might look on in favor for whatever pittance they request that day.

Seriously BLM, get a judgement. At least try to look fair.

It's Saturday. Obama doesn't work weekends (or outside of 9:00-5:00 on weekdays). Perhaps that's a good thing.

Cattle on the hoof was 1.35 a pound day before yesterday. A grown steer comes in at about 1200 pounds, doesn’t it?

That’s a lot of money.

Now that they’ve had the roundup, Bundy should just go to market. :>)

I wonder at what level of Government this was called off? Coincidental that it happened right after Harry Reid’s involvement was exposed. Obama is too stupid to figure it out so it must have been Valerie Jarrett. Follow the money......

Wrong time of year. The feds rounded up cows that have just calved or will shortly. If they would have taken those to market, it would have crushed this family financially.

:) It needs to demand payment for any cattle that died from the stress. There had to be some.

Agree. The BLM seemed committed to a confrontation of Janet Reno proportions...

Bundy needs to demand payment for dead cattle, there had to be some that got stressed out and sulked until they died.

Likely brood cows, not steers. You do not put steers on open range to fatten them. Good brood cows are hand selected and usually worth double sale barn “meat” prices.

"Nearly two dozen police officers and a SWAT unit were at the scene to keep the peace and assist the BLM enforcement officers to safely leave the area."

PRO TIP: The technical term for a situation where the guys with guns escort their leaders away from the confrontation to take them to safety is called "Retreating" which means those leaders have lost the battle.

Feeder calves were much higher...memory says in the 1.80 a pound hoof weight. I’d weigh the dead ones and send a bill.

I suspect that the BLM overplayed it’s hand and Reid and Obama began to see some political blowback. I have heard that none of the cattle auction operations would touch the cattle. That would force the BLM to shoot the cattle, something that they could not do without a photo leaking. That would have been a major political disaster.

They will go back, lick their wounds and go at it another way. In the meantime, Reid’s criminal activity has been exposed and he needs to be hit in the face with it.

Reid got nervous. Probably told Jarrett to call off BLM or he’d make Obama’s life miserable.

yeah, but 100 pounds of calf at 1.80 is only $180 vs $1600 for the steer.

But, i agree, send them a bill for any lost merchandise.
