Federal agency pulls back in Nevada ranch standoff, but legal fight remains

The Bureau of Land Management announced Saturday that it has concluded its mission to remove illegal cattle from a rural Nevada range after a tense week-long standoff with a rancher and militia supporters.

"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," the statement read.

Bureau officials had dismantled designated protest areas supporting rancher Cliven Bundy, who they say refuses to comply with the "same laws that 16,000 public land ranchers do every year."

"After 20 years and multiple court orders to remove the trespass cattle, Mr. Bundy owes the American taxpayers in excess of $1 million. The BLM will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially," the statement said. "We ask that all parties in the area remain peaceful and law-abiding as the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service work to end the operation in an orderly manner."

A group of about 1,000 supporting Bundy cheered and sang "The Star Spangled Banner" when BLM made its announcement.

All of the BLM are gone and the cattle have been released. Saw it on live feed. The BLM boys got a one finger salute from the crowd as they exited.

Wow!

There must be an election this year.

BTW, your tag line always makes me smile (I think I might have mentioned this before).

I wonder if the BLM official who thought up that talking point about somebody not complying with the same laws thousands of other people did ever heard of Rosa Parks? Or the founding fathers?

Isn't it a great tradition in our nation for people protesting an unjust law to disobey it? Americans have done that since the beginning of our nation. Maybe the other 16,000 ranchers are also being taken advantage of by the government, and the laws need changing.

It was inspiring to see how Free Republic was acknowledged with having the "goods" on BLM that connected this to corrupt Washington, D.C. pukes. A big THANK YOU! to the FReeper who did it.

FReepers come through, yet again. Things were happening so quickly...Kudos to the FReeper(s) who shook the bushes and found the connections and links.

God bless the patriots who were able to stand with the Bundy's in person, and God bless FR and FReepers who turn EVERY stone!!

What legal fight? Bundy has lost every legal case the government has brought against him and he’s ignored the verdicts. Now that the BLM has backed down I don’t see what they have left to get him to obey the law.

Yes! Reminds me of The Minutemen and the border.. except it's several steps beyond that.

How many more hours before SPLC is sending out fund-raising letters citing Bundy, et al. as dangerous racists, xenophobes, homophobes . . . .

No kidding. Since when did defending our freedoms and liberties become a “bad” thing?

So much packed into one official statement of such short length.

How much of the taxpayer's money did they expend on this despotic raid?

What do they consider by "...will continue to work to resolve the matter administratively and judicially..."? How much more taxpayer money will be expended?

It seems that they were the major entity to be unlawful and belligerent - funny that they ask the People to act nicely.

By blinked, I meant the Feds realizing that they would have a tough time selling the American public on an armed conflict, regardless of who fired the first shot. But make no mistake, they WILL be back.

As for the weapons at their disposal, making the omelet will cost the good guys some eggs, no doubt, but in 1967, when I was in Vietnam, we had the superior weapons at our disposal, too. The omelet cost the VC and NVA a lot of eggs but their dogged determination won out. Guerilla forces of pissed-off Americans will be very hard to beat in the end. Mark my words, there will be many thousands and more.

“So he’s no better than Obama.”

Well for starters, he works for a living. And he’s probably a natural-born American.
