Rodents? Are they gerbils, hamsters, rats?

When I was a single man my live-in companions were gerbils. If I didn’t have a dog I definitely would like to raise some rats, based upon what I have read about their intelligence.

Gerbils. We got the first two about ten years ago, and every three years or so, we have to replace them. I don’t think they have as much potential intelligence as rats, but they do have personalities, of a sort, and they’re easy-care.

I, too, thought mine had some kind of personality, but their overwhelming attraction was how cute they were.

Hmmm. A note to women in the 15-29 year old demographic referred to in this CDC report:

If you’re under 21, by all means have a lap dog, not a baby!

If you’re over 21 and unmarried, by all means have a lap dog, not a baby!

If you’re over 21, married, and find yourself unable to financially and/or emotionally provide for a baby, by all means have a lap dog, and not a baby!

I don’t see a problem with these decisions.

Old folks without offspring can find themselves pretty lonely, not too mention no youngins to take care of them.

At 30 I had a dog, the upscale Manhattan lifestyle, and no longing for kids of my own. Isn’t that what nieces and nephews are for? At 37 I was blessed with a baby. Like that so much, I had 2 more at 39. We never know what life changes and surprises God will hand us. He’s funny that way.

For all those that do choose dogs over babies... may ye have as many dogs as you wish, but not a man at all, for all your ‘clocking’ years!

They are cute. Like many other rodents, their little faces look intelligent, even when they really aren’t.

Our dog was never interested in them, but the cats hang around the cage sometimes, obviously thinking, “We could eat you!”

This reminds me of Dana Perino, who eschews children, and talks endlessly about her dog. Pretty sad, really.

That was my first thought. My second thought was do these women want to get married.

It’s something that you can’t fully appreciate until you get there. I knew I wanted to have lots of kids, but I couldn’t imagine how wonderful it would be.

This is a blunder on your part. First, all children are conservative. Try to cut your child's sandwich in a different than you used to, and see what happens. Second, all children prefer the gender binary. They want Mom to be Mom and Dad to be Dad.

Third, child-raising turns women conservative, especiallly if they have husbands (who turn more conservative, too.)

It's just a lose-lose-lose when people don't procreate. Even liberals.

Everyone has to be distinctive in some way ...

Many people have children *and* pets. Of the people I know with lots of children, they tend to have either no pets or many pets. I think the public senses when you’re a pushover and will take their unwanted cat, snake, or lizard because you can’t bear to think of its being homeless.

women in the 15-to-29-years-old group

Where did we get the "15-to-29" age group? Next they'll be talking about commonalities among "women in the 5-to-19-year-old age group.

It might be interesting to compare how many women in the 23-to-37 age group choose "single with dog" over "married with children." At least having children is a reasonable option for everyone in that age range.

“I’d rather have a dog over a kid,” said Sara Foster, 30, the proud owner of a French bulldog named Maddie, the New York Post reported. “It’s just less work and, honestly, I have more time to go out. You … don’t have to get a baby sitter.”

Imagine if your mother thought that, Sara. Well, at least you wouldn't be around to be so burdened...

Seriously, I was having dinner with my two kids, 17 and 13 year old last night, and it occurred to me what delightful little conversationalists they were becoming, and how much I loved them. That they were just babies only a moment ago, in my eyes, made it that more poignant. Time goes so fast, but I am sure proud my kids exist!

When your kids grow up to be decent, responsible adults you feel such a sense of accomplishment. How do you get that with a dog?
