Nevada Cattle Rancher Wins 'Range War' With Feds
abc ^ | April 12, 2014 | Liz Field

A Nevada cattle rancher appears to have won his week-long battle with the federal government over a controversial cattle roundup that had led to the arrest of several protesters.

Cliven Bundy went head to head with the Bureau of Land Management over the removal of hundreds of his cattle from federal land, where the government said they were grazing illegally.

Bundy claims his herd of roughly 900 cattle have grazed on the land along the riverbed near Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, since 1870 and threatened a "range war" against the BLM on the Bundy Ranch website after one of his sons was arrested while protesting the removal of the cattle.

"I have no contract with the United States government," Bundy said. "I was paying grazing fees for management and that's what BLM was supposed to be, land managers and they were managing my ranch out of business, so I refused to pay."

The federal government had countered that Bundy "owes the American people in excess of $1 million " in unpaid grazing fees and "refuses to abide by the law of land, despite many opportunities over the last 20 years to do so."

However, today the BLM said it would not enforce a court order to remove the cattle and was pulling out of the area.

"Based on information about conditions on the ground, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have made a decision to conclude the cattle gather because of our serious concern about the safety of employees and members of the public," BLM Director Neil Kornze said.

Must be an awfully stupid rancher that lets his herd destroy it’s food source.

The grazing fees are used primarily to help mitigate and repair the damage that larges herds of cows can inflict.

Therein lies one of the problems. The BLM ceased using the fees for management of the land.

Anyone who has ever been around cattle can attest that they can stomp a mud hole quicker than any other critter on earth.

There wouldn't be any mudholes there at all if the ranchers didn't put in wells and build catchments for rain water at their own expense would there?

Increasingly blatant corruption, overreach and heavy-handed enforcement is what leads to the firestorm no matter how misplaced the flashpoint or imperfect the tinder.

In this present day and age, the battle lines have already been drawn.

“He has consistently lost in court and has no legal leg to stand on.”

Yes, he has IN FEDERAL COURT! The feds need to return the land they extorted from all of the Western States! That is what Bundy is really trying to accomplish. He was using that land long before there was a BLM or a scheme to charge for the use of “public land.” Also, the fact of the matter is that the BLM isn’t a “steward for public land.” The notion that they are there to “manage it” is laughable. The reason the BLM has left ( and least left for now) is that Dingy Harry Reid’s game here to take that land for a solar energy plant that his worthless son is cooking up with the Red Chinese has been exposed.
I take it that you are NOT one of “the many” who think that federal “ownership” of most of the West isn’t o.k. Just a thought, most of us on FR don’t feel the way that you seem to.

“They’ll probably “discover” a dog-fighting facility or something.”

More like a Tortise Trafficing ring, held in slavery for sex purposes.

Perhaps we can explain, XR, why the feds decide to pull out as soon as other info about Harry Reid and additional BLM takings in Red River Texas and elsewhere are beginning to surface.

Maybe we should wonder why this being picked up throughout the news under the heading of Cops Gone Wild also seems to have led to BLM’s departure.

And maybe we should wonder if the many discussions that are being had about the imposition of the government on age old land usage customs has somewhere struck a real legal nerve of those who recognize there’s a case here.

And finally, we should wonder if all the debate about the government “owning us” is making them sweat.

A Chicago Alderman once told me that there were “good” guns and “bad” guns.

I suspect the BLM will be back. I wonder if the rancher is simply stealing or has a legit beef with how the land he was paying fees on was being managed. Knowing Greenies, I suspect he may have an issue. They don’t like the light of day.

"Since then he has refused to pay the BLM what they are legally owed. The BLM works for the taxpayers (whether they do a good job or not is irrelevant) therefore by not paying BLM, Bundy is stealing from US taxpayers."

Only if you don't know the whole story... Example: I rent you an apartment for 600 dollars you have a family of 6. You have a lease for 20 years.

I tell you after 5 years you can still have the apartment but you can only have 1 person living there but the rent is still the same.

The law states I can't do this and until I change back to the original agreement I can not enforce the rent legally.

The BLM told Bundy the same thing he was not allowed to keep his 900 or more cattle on the property anymore he was only allowed 150 Cows on the property BUT he had to pay the same fees.

Its why the government could never force him to leave the land until they used the tortoise angle. Then its revealed the BLM is euthanizing 100s of tortoises. So it was all BS from the get go.

If it was a simple matter of non-payment of rent he would've lost in court over 19 years ago. He didn't!

According to his profile, he’s from New Jersey, therefore doesn’t know his a** from a hole in the ground about BLM issues. He probably wants Christie to run for President, too.

The concept is that the fees are supposed to be used for the management and maintenance of the grazing areas. Mr. Bundy’s original argument was that he felt his fee money wasn’t being used for that purpose. This years’s grazing fee is $1.36 per head per month.

Obama will not let this stand—he will use all the tools in his bag to humble this family and turn them into a joke—before he has them strangled. They better watch out for drones and the iRS. Watch as he....
1. Have Hollywood, Jimmy K. etc... make these ranchers look like Idiots—Tools of the Kotch Brothers and Sarah Palin.
2. Use IRS to rob him of all they have.
3. Have Union Thugs decend on them from Las Vegas.
4. Go over every element of their lives to find something they can tar them with.
5. Have their e-mail accounts hacked.
6. A bunch of traffic “accidents” could happen to them.
7. Total News Blackout on this issue.
8. Where was the Governor of Nevada in all this? I thought he was a Republican? He should have been the one to stop this—not a local sheriff.

The FED backing off is all about the midterm election. An outraged public isn’t going to vote for owebama’s party!

* * *

Nail on the head. The feds saw this turning into another Ruby Ridge and they don’t want that before the midterms. But they’ll keep coming back, and coming back . . . . Bundy had better pay those fees that are in arrears (no matter how unfair he finds them) AND lawyer up AND keep in touch with his militia friends, or he’ll be off that land.

*UPDATE: Those who say Bundy is a “deadbeat” are making inaccurate claims. Bundy has in fact paid fees to Clark County, Nevada in an arrangement pre-dating the BLM. The BLM arrived much later, changed the details of the setup without consulting with Bundy — or any other rancher — and then began systematically driving out cattle and ranchers. Bundy refused to pay BLM, especially after they demanded he reduce his heard’s head count down to a level that would not sustain his ranch. Bundy OWNS the water and forage rights to this land. He paid for these rights. He built fences, established water ways, and constructed roads with his own money, with the approval of Nevada and BLM. When BLM started using his fees to run him off the land and harassing him, he ceased paying. So should BLM reimburse him for managing the land and for the confiscation of his water and forage rights?

Celebrating with a new Ruger Mini 14...If I can find one.

They are pretty easy to find right now. Most gun stores have more than one in stock, in Oregon. I had two of them until that boat trip last week.

You can’t excuse lawbreaking just because you identify and sympathize with the lawbreaker.

Occupy Wall street sympathizers seem to have invaded freeperland.

It is not about the fees, it is not even their land. Read the treaty that transferred the land to the United States from Mexico.
