My understanding is that sports is a break even proposition for most universities: they spend on them as much as they get back.

The real money is in alumni contributions. For some reason a successful football or basketball season brings in more alumni donations than reports of a breakthrough made at the university in cancer research.

So long as alumni contributions are tied to the warm-fuzzies brought on by winning teams there will be no major changes to the current system.
