In France, it’s now illegal to work late

Unions and employers in France have come to a labor agreement that employees are not allowed to check their work-related emails once the work day is done, the Guardian reports. Although the country adopted the 35-hour work week in 1999, workers have complained about having to clock in at home.

The deal, which is legally binding, affects 250,000 employees in the tech and consultancy industries, including workers at the French branches of Google, Facebook, and Deloitte.

Under the new law – which does not have a particular time requirement – employees cannot look at their computers, phone, or anything else that has work-related content once they step out of the office.

I’ve always wondered if these French employment laws were enforced on the self-employed as well. I mean, suppose you run a little book shop, cobbler shop, something like that with no employees. Does somebody come around and tell you how many hours to work?
I have only visited France(Calais) once, for a few hours.

From what I have heard, yes.

I've worked three 55 hour weeks followed by three 70 hour weeks this year. Thankfully, the crunch time ended and I'm back at 40 hour weeks. The weeks I worked over 40 hours were still only paid for 40 hours. We landed a huge contract and I was the sole person with the skill sets, clearances and ability to deliver. It's done and we are underway. The union pukes would have caused the loss of a $35 million contract. It' s hard to fix stupid.

Won’t be the same policy for companies they own and operate here in the US you can bet. Mr Frog will be off drinking wine while the American employees will still be plugging away.

I don’t understand why any young, ambitious Frenchman or woman would stay in that socialist hellhole. Maybe there aren’t any ambitious Frenchmen anymore. I’ve met a couple top-notch French engineers, but they were older, either Baby Boomer or early Gen-X.

Rofl... And this applies to who exactly? I can almost guarantee not one Frenchie has worked late in a generation.

"Does somebody come around and tell you how many hours to work?"

Imagine if they try that here. The NSA will monitor you, and if you work overtime or check your e-mail from home, they'll send a SWAT team in the middle of the night, to kick your door in, and arrest you.

And all this will happen while the SWAT team and 800 government employees involved in your arrest, have million dollar retirement packages, and make 3 times what you make- And while their salary and retirement is being paid for by your taxes.

Ain't socialism great?
