More young women choosing dogs over motherhood

America’s next generation of youngsters should be called “Generation Rex.” If you’re wondering why playgrounds around the city are so quiet and dog runs are packed, a new report has an answer: More and more US women are forgoing motherhood and getting their maternal kicks by owning handbag-size canines.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that a big drop in the number of babies born to women ages 15 to 29 corresponds with a huge increase in the number of tiny pooches owned by young US women, reports the business-news site Quartz.

Dog-crazy New York ladies told The Post that they aren’t surprised by the findings — and that they happily gave up diaper changes, temper tantrums and college funds for the easy affection of their doggy “child.”

“I’d rather have a dog over a kid,” declared Sara Foster, 30, a Chelsea equities trader who says her French bulldog, Maddie, brings her more joy than a child.

“It’s just less work and, honestly, I have more time to go out. You ;. don’t have to get a baby sitter.” The federal data behind the report show that over the past seven years, the number of live births per 1,000 women between ages 15 and 29 in America has plunged 9 percent.

This isn't a very nice country anymore.

Between Jeb Bush, Obama, McCain, and Holder, do any of us want our lines to continue? The thought of a great grandchild growing up in the third world hellhole that use to be the United States is not comforting.

Every city Detroit - every government agency with their own SWAT teams... The IRS and FBI roughing up folks in the 'wrong' political party.

Cultural suicide's happening. And with it - the desire to have children.

It’s best that people who have never grown up not have children. They would be very poor parents.

In a way that’s sorta true. Who today is equipped to fend off the assaults from every angle? Who ever really was? Today it’s 24/7 institution vs. parent. And not just the ‘officials’. I remember a story here about parents having CPS called by neighbors because they let their kid play outside in the cul de Sac without ‘parental supervision’.

Kids can’t do anything without some busybody getting offended, parents can’t raise their kids with morality/faith without having it countermanded by ‘society’...

And if you don’t offer your kid up to the Gay lobby you are a bigot homophobe.

If this is the future then we need to die out as a species.

I think there’s great sadness behind people choosing not to have children. I wish there was some undiscovered land that all of us could flee to...

The article is really assuming that women don’t want children, and have made this choice on their own, when I doubt that is the case. The fact that there is a rise in these “mini-dog” substitutes shows that their basic maternal impulses are there, unsatisfied.

What is really going on is that men have been shying away from impregnating women, because we know that is just the quick road to financial serfdom nowadays. Then, the childless women tell themselves that their barrenness was their own choice, to shield their fragile egos.

My neighbor of five years is one of these women. However, she leaves the dog, a young Alaskan Malamute, alone sometimes for more than a full day at a time. She did the same thing with her previous Malamute, 12 year-old “Lucky”. Well, Lucky died and within 3 months she got the new puppy. “Maggie” is a cardio nurse, working at one of the big hospitals in Metro Detroit. She lets the dog(s) crap anywhere they want to but she never picks up after them even though there is a local ordinance. So my question is...What sort of mother would she be? Would she treat a child the same way? Better that she’s just a dog owner, I guess...

Also, “Maggie” is a narcissist who complains about people drinking and playing music...and having fun without her. She’s vain and also a tailgater on the freeway. I’ve seen it for myself. I tried but now I’m all done trying to be nice to her. She’s not bad looking but her attitude really stinks. I hope somebody rats her out for her chronic neglect of that dog. Maybe one day she’ll wake up and smell the dog sh*t but she’s probably “okay with it”.

Bingo. I had a woman in my office that fit this statement to the T!

300 employees here. The under 30 females have NO interest in kids....and most have small dog pictures on their desks. We also have 3 girls (I refuse to call them women) whom have adopted black babies right after getting married. All the women are absolutely beautiful, model material with perfect figures. All 3 are between 22 and 28 with good looking husbands.

We cannot figure out why they adopted black children before trying to have a family themselves?! Seems like a fad or something? My wife and I are older, and we are considering adopting, but we alos have started/made our family!

Methinks they don't want to wreck their figure, and do the most absurd matching-dressup-decorating-holiday-cutsie-facebook posting contests among themselves. (We had to block FB at work because of them actually). Its almost like they are having a Barbie-doll dressing contests among themselves. I just don't get it. Creepy. Glad those kids are getting a MUCH better life, but I wouldn't adopt until I tried to have my own kids.

Maybe I'm just an old fuddy duddy.

Probably an unpopular opinion but if these women feel this way.. they aren’t ready to be a parent.

Somehow this reminds me of a long-ago "Doonsbury" comic where the subject of a relationship and a child are brought up. The recommendation "Try her out with a puppy" is made.

If all you had to choose from were limp wristed pajama boy types you’d probably choose dogs too...

That has a LOT to do with it. Put masculine men in proximity with feminine women, and things work out as they always have. This is still the norm in ‘flyover country’, outside of the big cities.

I wasn’t ready to be a parent until I became one. It took about 90 seconds of holding my newborn to be totally revamped and restructured from a defeated Peter Pan to a triumphant Dad.

Of course, you are correct, and I think most people would agree with you here. The posted article was speaking in broad terms. I was responding in broad terms.

As you correctly point out, there will always be folks who either cannot have children, or who choose not to have children for specific reasons. Again, I was simply trying to point out the neo-cultural values of placing self above all else versus individual circumstances.

Thanks for your comments.

A new word I learned a few years ago.
Parents don’t have grandsons and granddaughters.
They become granddoggers. Dogs replace kids for the grandparents too!!

In its way, this kind of rot is every bit as much a part of the culture of death as bloodier and more deviate expressions. This is embracing sterility and extinction with a cheesy smiley face and ribbons. Dog in the manger, indeed.

Actually, I think you hit on something. I do think there is an undercurrent in culture among women that do not want to jeopardize their figures by having a baby. I specifically recall Jillian Michaels publicly saying she wasn't ready for having a baby because she didn't want to mess up her figure. I don't think she's alone.

Moreover, the extraordinarily high (and prurient) value society places on “hot” women, I believe, compels them to protect their beauty at all costs as it is of supreme value to them.

I am also mindful of the very wise saying:

“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain.”
