On the one hand we have Cliven Bundy and his family of ranchers on the same property ranching cattle from the early 1800s since before the Federal government claimed all the land they have been using for grazing. On the other hand we have 200 plus armed federal agents, including trained snipers, using brute force intimidation tactics against the Bundy family and their way of life.
Why? Because of a tortoise. A situation the federal establishment is very good at blowing up into murder, seizure of real property and federal standoffs, standoffs that are famous for resulting in the deaths of innocent children. In order for average citizens to stand with the Bundys and support them against this misuse of federal authority your Bureau of Land Management has graciously provided a small area which they designate as a First Amendment Area.

He stopped paying for grazing rights BEFORE it was declared off-limits for grazing. He’s been freeloading off the gov’t by grazing his cattle for free and pocketing the difference. He is a trespasser and taker.

He quit paying the BLM but, tried giving his grazing fees to the county, which they turned down. So my dad just went on running his ranch and making his own improvements with his own equipment and his own money, not taxes. In essence the BLM was managing my dad out of business. Well when buying him out didn’t work, they used the indangered species card. You’ve already heard about the desert tortis. Well that didn’t work either, so then began the threats and the court orders, which my dad has proven to be unlawful for all these years. Now their desperate. It’s come down to buying the brand inspector off and threatening the County Sheriff. Everything their doing at this point is illegal and totally against the constitution of the United States of America. Now you may be saying,” how sad, but what does this have to do with me?” Well, I’ll tell you. They will get rid of Cliven Bundy, the last man standing on the Bunkerville allotment and then they will close all the roads so no one can ever go on it again. Next, it’s Utah’s turn. Mark my words, Utah is next.
Then there’s the issue of the cattle that are at this moment being stolen. See even if dad hasn’t paid them, those cattle do belong to him. Regardless where they are they are my fathers property. His herd has been part of that range for over a hundred years, long before the BLM even exsisted. Now the Feds think they can just come in and remove them and sell them without a legal brand inspection or without my dad’s signature on it. They think they can take them over two boarders, which is illegal, ask any trucker. Then they plan to take them to the Richfeild Aucion and sell them. All with our tax money. They have paid off the contract cowboys and the auction owner as well as the Nevada brand inspector with our tax dollars. See how slick they are?
What I’m seeing is a fedgov who will spend vast
amounts of time and money to prevent cattle from
grazing on land that they clain.
Yet at the same time they refuse to spend or prevent
illegal aliens from coming across our border and
grazing on OUR land.

The land that Bundy is trespassing on and claiming squatters rights to is US federal land. There are no states rights issues here.
Federal lands comprise about 85% of Nevada so he probably isn’t alone. If the cows are such a threat, looks to me like the blm needs to round up all the horses currently “trespassing” on federal lands as well. Either that or shoot them from choppers and let the predators dine on their carcasses. Animal rights activists would have a field day with that one. After all, they, like cows, are imports to the US.

We’ve been past the big corral north of Reno and to see all the hundreds of horses there with absolutely no shade is pretty sad. They get food and water but there’s no place for them to escape the sun in the summer. At least when they are roaming out on blm land they can find a gulley or a wash or outcropping to get out of the sun.
Ah! Ha! It is a sad sad when you awake to check the news to see what critical details were left out of yesterdays stories and find that the straw that broke the camel’s back is a tortoise.

Do you know if they sell horses? My daughter is keen on getting one in a couple of years.
I think the blm has auctions occasionally but not sure when they occur. Probably find something on the blm web site. Some of those animals are absolutely gorgeous. We used to have some property on the east side of town and the horses would come by frequently. My wife and I were walking near them and a big mare “snuck” up behind us and put her face in between us and let us scratch her. She obviously had been fed by somebody in the area she was so friendly.

Such unintended consequences cause me to believe it has less (if anything) to do with environmentalism and more to do with massive land grabs. I think this is how the alliance of county, state and fed bureaucracies eventually got ownership of all the land around Del Mar.
Put an add in Craigslist and ask for a free one. Lots of people are turning theirs out on state land because they can’t afford the feed and vet bills these days.
