Nevada Governor Slams Feds in 'New Ruby Ridge' Battle

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday blasted the Bureau of Land Management for its "offensive" conduct in a bitter dispute with a farmer whose cattle graze on federal land — including the bureau’s designation of a "First Amendment area" where people can protest.

In a scalding statement, Sandoval jumped squarely into the middle of a 20-year-old feud between farmer Cliven Bundy and the BLM — focusing his wrath specifically on a penned-in area that the federal agency considers the only place where people can speak freely.

"Most disturbing to me is the BLM's establishment of a 'First Amendment area' that tramples upon Nevadans' fundamental rights under the U.S. Constitution," Sandoval said.

"To that end, I have advised the BLM that such conduct is offensive to me and countless others and that the 'First Amendment area' should be dismantled immediately.

"No cow justifies the atmosphere of intimidation which currently exists nor the limitation of constitutional rights that are sacred to all Nevadans. The BLM needs to reconsider its approach to this matter and act accordingly," Sandoval said.

The scolding comes in the wake of an eruption over the weekend of the long-simmering feud, in which Bundy's cattle were rounded up and his son arrested, the Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

"My ancestors created the rights to that land one hundred and some odd years ago," Bundy’s daughter Bailey Logue told the LA Times. "And we’re not giving them up."

Good for the Governor

That roped off “First Amendment Area” was totally offensive.

The BLM IS the government, and we can speak freely to them anytime, anyplace, any subject.

They should buy a clue

Under the 10th amendment, the feds do not have the power to take this man’s land or other properties, without the cooperation of the state.

Then again, the state could simply do nothing and the feds can act however they please

Feds may act only with the approval of the County Sheriff.

Then order them out or arrest them.

Not attacking you are intending any offense of any kind.

The governor has merely sent a strongly worded letter but, abdicated his authority as the leader of a sovereign state by not acting and tossing them out.

Personally, I’d love to see a confrontation between a governor and the Fed. It’s high time there was a direct states rights standoff.

State police and SWAT should show up and start harassing the feds. Set up their own roadblocks and start an investigation basically restricting the feds and their ability to operate. No feds in, no feds out. Come with every excuse possible to limit their mobility, cut their supply lines, starve them. How long will they last with no food or water in the hot Nevada sun. If the feds can block an area, so can state. Make them miserable. Make them pay.

If the Governor realy wanted to make an issue out of this Federal incursion he would send the national guard there and kick the feds off of the guys property.

I agree. Let’s see if the FedGov thugs are really ready to spill their fellow Americans’ blood for no good reason. I would love for somebody like Levin to begin broadcasting from the “First Amendment zone”.

Then call out the national guard and the state police.

It would be a good start if he’d publicly, on TV order all snipers, swats, etc. out of Nevada and tell them to quit escalating a questionable situation.

I’d like to see their reaction to that.

They've already proven they're willing to spill fellow Americans' blood.

The question is are they willing to spill their own.

Governor Sandoval is a republican and might be the right guy. He supposed to be strong on the 10th amendment and wants the Feds to get out of the way of the state in energy production off ANY land (including Fed) in Nevada.

I can see that.

This rancher ties in with that.

Why should the state pay the Fed to set up a drilling site or a solar site on their own land?

They have already killed his cattle, and are pushing an exclusion zone further and further out.

They plan on killing this guy.

“Then call out the national guard and the state police.”
I agree with your thought but I am no longer sure who the police and national guard actually take orders from. On paper it would be the governor but in reality I think he who pays the fiddler calls the tune. By now we should know who pays the fiddler in my state it is obvious who pays the fiddler.

Map showing First Amendment areas, each designated with a two-letter abbreviation. Anything less is unacceptable and illegitimate.
