This Japanese toilet should make Americans very worried
The Week ^ | April 9, 2014 | Noah Smith

I remember about 10 years ago, I was watching a National Geographic show about a hunter-gatherer tribe in Papua New Guinea. The men were running around in loincloths with spears, hunting animals, making offerings to the gods — you know, typical primitive-tribe stuff. But okay, I don't judge... we're all descended from people like that.

.........................................................

I suspect that the real reason we don't adopt Japanese toilets is the very fact that people are so eager to give reasons not to. We've grown used to the idea that everything good is invented in America. If it wasn't invented here, it must not be worth having, we tell ourselves. It's a toxic combination of "golden age mentality" and national chauvinism — a symptom of "Ming America."

When I was in Britain, the toilets were often in special little rooms separate from the sink, shower or tub. Very practical idea, I thought.

I have 3 Toto toilets. Best bang for the buck. Amazon sold them at a reasonable cost and with free delivery. I paid extra for the gloss treatment, which works very well. Always flushed everything using one flush. In three years I never had to flush a toilet twice. Can’t say that for the previous toilets.

I’ve seen Totos in an Arizona hotel where water is a premium. It wasn’t a fancy hotel, either. I don’t remember which chain it was but it was something on the order of a Comfort Inn.

The transit systems here are doing what they can to encourage riders to use electronic cards, and outside on the platform in some cases. I know it makes it easier for bus drivers not to argue with punks a out expired transfers, etc.
Transit security usually(but not always) comes on board with a gadget that checks to see if you paid. You never know when or where they will show up.

The idea of squatting toilets of any kind scares me now because of the condition of my knees. I wonder what people with bad knees do in these countries?

I suspect that the author hires somebody like me to clean his bathroom.

Noah Smith is woefully uninformed. The Kohler (Wisconsin) Numi Toilet is much more advanced that the Japanese toilet.

The less fancy Kohler jap style toilets for the peasants. ; )

"After only a couple of days they couldn’t take it any longer and moved into a hotel for the rest of their visit."

Why, what happened? What's the rest of the story?

One of the best selling toilets is Toto, Japanese. They are plain, simple toilets well designed. I had them in my last house.

Ditto. Hate it. The main reason I hate it is in case of a plumbing overflow.

How do you know?

I don't. It's pure wild-eyed speculation ... and an off-color joke. But don't be shocked if there's some truth to it.

I had heard they had panty dispensers, but didnt realize they were used.

"Used" is the whole point. It's catering to a weird fetish. It seemed to me that the alleged "user" was often supposed to be a very young woman, perhaps under-aged girl.

I've looked at a lot of high-end plumbing, and I like simple.

I'll take expensive, quality, and simple over complex at the same price. You won't even get me to look at cheap and complex, as all I'm thinking is “trouble”.

If I had backside issues, a bidet feature might interest me, but I don't and it doesn't. Its not that I've never had the experience, its just that I don't value it.

Warm seats? No thanks. I'm just doing my business and then I'm moving along.

Next thing I know, you'll be trying to sell me toilet paper without the bark in it ;-)
