U.S. defense chief gets earful as China visit exposes tensions

Tensions between China and the United States were on full display on Tuesday as Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel faced questions in Beijing about America's position in bitter territorial disputes with regional U.S. allies.

Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan, standing side-by-side with Hagel, called on the United States to restrain ally Japan and chided another U.S. ally, the Philippines.

Then, Hagel was sharply questioned by Chinese officers at the National Defense University. One of them told Hagel he was concerned that the United States was stirring up trouble in the East and South China Sea because it feared someday "China will be too big a challenge for the United States to cope with."

"Therefore you are using such issues ... to make trouble to hamper (China's) development," the officer said.

The consequences of having a weak and spineless US Administration that forgot it is a big, dangerous world out there, is coming home to roost.

Welcome to the Post-America World, folks. It's going to be a much more dangerous place.

Anyone who even listens to the Chinese thugs is an idiot. Is Hagel stupid enough to treat their comments as sincere?

From China’s US Ambassador:

At a seminar in New York, China’s ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai said Washington needed to think hard about the purpose of its military presence in Asia and whether its political agenda and those of its Asian allies were the same.

He spoke of the need to move away from “outdated alliances” and warned against any attempt to create an Asian version of the NATO Western military alliance to contain China.

“If your mission there is to contain some other country, then you are back in the Cold War again, maybe,” he said. If your intention is to establish an Asian NATO, then we are back in the Cold War-era again. This is something that will serve nobody’s interest, it’s quite clear.”

China feeling Hagel out to see if he’s willing to sellout South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan to Chinese aggression.
Bet Hagel lost face in their eyes.

Idiot Hagel actually said we should not be put in a position where we have to choose between China and Japan!

SEATO didn't work last time, either. The proper military role for the US in Asia remains muddled - at least in part because everybody still hates Japan. With Singapore and South Korea having become much closer to China over the past two decades, the alliances at this point really aren't all that clear.

And it will be the fault of the President that succeeds Obama.

Just you wait...

Amazing that the Chicom's feel comfortable enough to do this knowing it will be broadcast around the world, knowing we are a weakened nation because of Hagel's boss.

Maybe one of the contributing factors was this stupid ass idea to brief China on our cyber warfare capabilities and our roadmap going forward to thwart cyber attacks and thinking the Chicom's would reciprocate?

We have been slashing the military for 5 years. Morale is destroyed. Troop and retiree benefits are being cut or Hagel is threatening to cut them. The world will explode and we will have done ourselves in.

You know the ChiComs would not have pulled this kind of BS if Rumsfeld was still Sec. of Defense.

I would love to hear Rummy tee off on some ChiCom nitwit.

The next couple of decades are probably going to involve a military showdown with China over regional dominance. At the current time the PLA isn’t in a position to significantly deter or challenge U.S. intervention in Asia, but they’re busily toiling away in that eventual direction.

The only question is whether perpetual weakness from the U.S. and repeatedly unanswered challenges from China will encourage a few hotheads amongst the party to gamble on overt action before the PLA has sufficient resources to walk-the-walk.

Here’s the deal in China. All who look like Chinese are Chinese and must be citizens of China (nearly all of east Asia). Then, the West must pay for colonizing China. British Empire of yesterday, western culture nations—all the same.
