Awful Dreadful Snake (Stanley Brothers), Knoxville Girl (Louvin Brothers) based on old Irish, then English, traditional murder ballad), and “Voice From On High” and “Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem”, both Bill Monroe, Country Gentleman’s version of Fox On The Run”, Stanley Brothers’ “Rank Strangers To Me”, and the New Kentucky Colonels really fast, extended, hard-driving version of “Sally Goodin”-it’s the best driving song ever.

The one and only Hurricane Song, in case this never gets asked, is Leon Everette’s “Hurricane”. I can’t help but think of this song anytime I cross Ponchartrain.

The Australian Special Air Service regiment’s official song is “The Happy Wanderer”

I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.

Chorus:
Val-deri,Val-dera,
Val-deri,
Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Val-deri,Val-dera.
My knapsack on my back.

I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun,
So joyously it calls to me,
“Come! Join my happy song!”

I wave my hat to all I meet,
And they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet
From ev’ry green wood tree.

High overhead, the skylarks wing,
They never rest at home
But just like me, they love to sing,
As o’er the world we roam.

Oh, may I go a-wandering
Until the day I die!
Oh, may I always laugh and sing,
Beneath God’s clear blue sky!

Oops, I thought you meant oldtime and tradtitional “hill” (Appalachian) music based on ancient ballads and tunes brought over by the Scotch, English, Irish, and every mix of those three from Britain.

Their best ever contribution to is yet come. YouTube “best clogging you’ll ever see”-amazing footage of youngsters doing a perfect clog dance as the oldsters play and call (look like early 60s). One old couple puts them all to shame, but the youngsters have such fresh, glowing faces, beautiful smiles and even dimples on the girls, all over at Grandpa/Uncle/Cousin/Whatever Basxomb’s to clog for the big city boy filming them. They were just as natural and unconsious as could be, and you could tell they spent time practicing and learning the old calls, dances, and music.

Anyway, I’m nostalgic for something which isn’t even my personal past, but these are part of my people,

I had a chance to learn, too - my mom used to teach piano. I wasn’t interested then, but now I wish I’d learned the basics. Mark Twain was right about regrets being more associated with the things we didn’t do, than with the things we did.

a favorite: Hot rod Lincoln:

Pulled out of San Pedro late one night
And the moon and the stars were shining bright
We was drivin' up Grapevine Hill
Passin' cars like they was standing still
