The next hot fitness trend? Training like a Navy SEAL
Foxnews.com/NYPost ^ | 3/31/2014

Training for U.S. Navy SEALs, the special operations force, follows a warrior tradition that harkens back to Samurais, but fitness experts say the tough regime is gaining popularity with entrepreneurs, corporate executives, lawyers and elite athletes.

The workout, geared toward mental as well as physical transformation, is so demanding that the casual gym-goer looking to shed 10 pounds before swimsuit season need not apply.

“We look at training as being as important to our life as eating and sleeping,” said retired Navy SEAL commander and fitness instructor Mark Divine, the author of “8 Weeks to SEALFIT: a Navy Seal’s Guide to Unconventional Training for Physical and Mental Toughness.”

SEALFIT draws on the varied, high-intensity interval training of CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, strongman exercises, yoga, and martial arts.

“CrossFit is baked into the SEALFIT model,” said Divine, “but our workouts are much longer: two hours if you go through the whole thing.”

I sure couldn’t do all that, especially not at my age.

But I did buy a TRX device, invented by a Navy Seal. It’s small, portable and uses your own bodyweight to perform the exercises. No special equipment needed, a tree branch or a swingset will do. And boy does it work.

“8 Weeks to SEALFIT: a Navy Seal’s Guide to Unconventional Training for Physical and Mental Toughness.”

I would a break record there the SEALs would talk about for generations... as the fastest to ring the bell to get out.

In 1968, I went thru SERE school beginning at North Island in southern California. North Island was a SEAL training base and probably still is.

When I arrived, I noticed lots of people who never stopped in one place unless they continued jogging, in place. They never stopped. Those were wannabe SEALS, already qualified as UDT personnel.

That’s a job I didn’t want then and don’t want now.

Between swimming and this device: http://www.trxtraining.com/
I’ve got a lot of it covered. I tried to pick up running (at 53) it was ok for a while but too much for my knees.

I’m sure this program is way too tough for me. I have a suspicion, though, that tough as it is, it will be relatively moderate compared to actual SEAL training.

First, because the executives and so on are paying customers. The point will not be to weed out candidates not able to pass muster for an elite force routinely asked to do the near impossible, but to see those paying customers get their money’s worth.

Second, and I don’t mean this to sound sexist, but the story states that 20 to 30 percent of the class is typically female. I’m sure the women who sign up for this class are far more fit and athletic than I will ever be (and many could probably could kick my butt rather easily). But I question whether that many women could really possess the physical strength to complete actual SEAL physical training. Most men don’t, even in the prime of youth. I certainly couldn’t have hacked it.

I’m sure it’s a fine program, but I’m just sayin’.

Yea. I love my TRX too :). Also dig my plyometric boxes. If you have a chance check those out too. Sounds like you have a great workout going. :)

Boardroom posers and braggers. Also, I question the motives of special operators who would try to market what made them so. You can’t bottle zeal. It may sell to the gullible but it will not be genuine.
