....Hollywood has finally discovered Mexican Americans and turned its attention to Cesar Chavez as if all Mexican Americans adore Chavez. A movie partly based on fact will open this week in 400 theaters. I predict it will fail at the box office. Why?
Fact: only 5 percent of all American Hispanics are rural, thus 95 percent are city people who could care less about Mexican or Mexican American farm workers.

Like Obama, Chavez has a Hollywood cult.
Identifying all Mexicans with Cesar Chavez is like identifying all orientals with Charlie Chan..................
Back in the early ‘80s his unionization movement was moving east a bus full of workers refused to get out and work unless we gave them some exorbitant amount. My husband just said no so they left. The next day they returned minus the rabble rousers and told my husband that they had beaten them up for costing them a day’s work. Around here the unionization push just died.
was “honest” abe a reader of marx via horace greeley?
perhaps the movie will fail... but it will not be because of that... in fact, the 5 percent rural American Hispanics may not be the ones who actually go see the movie... i predict this movie will do the same as La Bamba and Selena... i do not come from a rural family... my siblings and their families are your typical middle class families... some are upper middle class... and most of them will go see this movie... while i did see La Bamba and Selena, i will not go see the Cesar Chavez movie... both La Bamba and Selena were about popular entertainers who started out their lives humbly, rose to the top, had the world and then died tragically... the Chavez movie is political...
...."Hollywood has finally discovered Mexican Americans and turned its attention to Cesar Chavez as if all Mexican Americans adore Chavez"....
Why didn't Chavez or some one like him do the same thing for the workers in Mexico?.....Well we know what would have happened to him if he had done that there. Our society is very tolerant toward the plight of the poor and the USA should be admired for our kindnesses.
Something tells me it's just Hollywood agitprop.
Of course it will be political. It will likely be a Hollywood lovefest for yet another Commie in their Prog Pantheon. The only question is whether he shall be depicted with a nimbus about his head.
My mother taught in the farm labor camps in the Coachella Valley. The week before the “Ghandi like” Chavez blew in to town, his henchmen would come and threaten the kill farm workers and their families if they went into the fields to work. As a result, no one would leave their houses for 2 weeks until UAW people would leave town. My mom’s classes were empty. We used to go bring food so they could eat. I don’t know any Hispancs that were actually involved then who don’t think that the entire pack of UAW thugs were terrorists lead directly by Chavez himself.
I wonder if this movie will include the fact that Cesar Chavez was against illegal immigration. Probably not.
I predict it will be required viewing in schools ala “An Inconvenient Truth”.
Who is Cesar Chavez? That somes it up.
If he isn’t the new Phillies Shortstop I don’t care.
Did you by chance live in Kerman or Fowler at the time? Famiky friends had run ins with Chavez’ goons. They threatened and beat up day loborers. Once they ran off the lobarers Chavez demanded only his UFW workers process tge fruit. They went ballistic when he didn’t give in and plowed under the season’s crop.
The Steinbacher book that I referred to in post #15 is full of such stories.
