Well its a good thing they aren’t worried about shaving, putting on makeup, reading, eating or any number of other things.
Such partial and biased stats makes me barf. Far fewer people ARE texting but no allowance for that in this story. This writer advocates nothing more than a complete ban.
btw: I have never been in an accident while in conversation. Now I would never dream of texting while driving either.
Look for the same number involving drugs. And, the same number for drunk driving. (Now we know the cause for 3 out of 4 crashes) That leaves 1 in 4 with no cause at all! /S
Let me pull over before I can comment.
I’m replying right now on my smartphone driving in heavy traffic and I just wanted to say.......ARGH, CRASH.......Whew, have to get back to you later....
Use a damn blue tooth type of device, idiots!
I agree they do cause some distraction but all these studies show the rise in accidents because of cell phones but traffic fatalities have gone down fairly steadily since the 60’s. You would think they would show some sort of a spike with the advent of the cell phone. They don’t.

I think this statistic needs further analysis.
Suppose that while driving, people are on the cell phone for 50% of that time while only causing 25% of the accidents ?
Texting( I believe) destroyed my new explorer last year and my wife spent the night in the hospital. The little Putz who rammed her in the rear as she was stopped at a light had no other excuse. He admitted he was wrong but not texting, but there was little question he was otherwise occupied. The cop at the scene winced as if in pain when I suggested the cause of the accident be check for alcohol and/or check his cell.
His insurance paid all bills but I refuse to buy another new car. I had my old Durango fixed up. I was so careful with the Explorer and all it took was one jerk otherwise occupied to total it.
Met my retired car insurance agent recently. Told him about the incident but not my suppositions as to the cause. First word out of his mouth was “Texting”.
It is an epidemic.
Yeah, well that has to be one of the top ten stupidest things I ever heard in my life.
Correlation does not equal causation. Just because somebody was talking on a phone when a crash occurred is not proof that the phone conversation caused the crash.
A man was stripping & driving in the car next to my mom and me the other day. He drove over the center median, and I looked to see what was wrong and his bare legs were up above the dash, then further down his shirt etc were off.
So my survey shows that two out of three accidents are caused by illegal Aliens!
Since 1 in 3 drivers are on the phone, then using the phone must make them safer!
They will ban cell phones. Unless the NSA mandates them so they can track you easier.
I have nearly been hit by more than one zombie with a blank stare on their face and a phone to their ear.
So the percentage of wrecks has increased 25% per x number of vehicles or miles driven? I don’t think so.
