Michelle: 'There Were Actually Laws in America that Allowed Discrimination Against Black People
weeklystandard.com ^ | March 25, 2014 | DANIEL HALPER

First Lady Michelle Obama talked about America as she visited a school today in China. She talked about the American dream:

And my story isn’t unusual in America. Some of our most famous athletes, like LeBron James, and artists, like the singer Janelle Monae, came from struggling families like mine, as do many business leaders -- like Howard Schultz. He’s the head of a company called Starbucks, which many of you may have heard of. When Mr. Schultz was a boy his father lost his job, leaving their family destitute. But Mr. Schultz worked hard. He got a scholarship to a university, and eventually built the largest coffeehouse company in the world.

And then there’s this other guy I know who was raised by a single mother who sometimes struggled to afford food for their family. But like me, this guy got scholarships and loans to attend universities. He became a lawyer and a professor, and then he was a state senator and then a national senator. And then, he became President of the United States. This guy I’m talking about is my husband, Barack Obama. (Applause.)

These stories are the stories of so many Americans, and of America itself. Because in America, we believe that no matter where you live or how much money your parents have, or what race or religion or ethnicity you are, if you work hard and believe in yourself, then you should have a chance to succeed. We also believe that everyone is equal, and that we all have the right to say what we think and worship as we choose, even when others don’t like what we say or don’t always agree with what we believe.

She was a poor victim-American.

Her father worked fro the post office. She had it better than most of us. Her family may have struggled at times but most do at one time or another. It is racist of her to think that only black families have struggled.

Classless grifters. Nothing more. How far this country has fallen.

Very good post, Wonko.

I would add, though, that Barack and Michelle Obama are compelling evidence that the "progress" you describe really didn't do anyone any good.

Everything I ever needed to know about race relations in the U.S., I learned from Bill Cosby. And he was right.

Her dad worked a nice job that brought in over 6 figures a year inflation adjusted dollars

She nor Obama ever had to struggle. They came from solidly middle to upper moddle class families.

Yep. They were called the, “Black Codes,” and they were the first gun control laws in America.

Which is why I call those who favor MORE gun control laws, “Racists.”

If the shoe fits...

All Dem’rats talk about “working harder” as if it were the stand-alone
key to all success. If you don’t also work “smarter” then all of your
hard work may not be worth two dead flies.

So, Michelle, how did you get that cushy $317K job as “vice president of community relations” at that hospital in Chicongo?

Would you have gotten that job if you were white?

Would you have gotten the raise from $122K to $317K if you were white?

Would you have gotten a free ride at Princeton University if you were white?

Maybe it would be great for her to drop the name of the Dr. Ben Carson. That would be a JUST thing to do, if she wanted Liberty and Justice for ALL.

He was raised by his grandmother. Neither of his parents had time for the little bastard.

His mother never struggled for food. She dumped the kid at her grandmother who was in good shape. And Obie had a nanny and lived in a mansion. Daddy 2 was in the oil business and well to do.

Guys, chill on the rhetoric. I’m no Obama supporter, but what she said sounded reasonable to me. Up until the 1960’s the game was fixed against minorities and she explained that correctly.

With that said, since about 1965 minorities have had zero to complain about in terms of equality and have still not made the progress we all would have expected. MLK’s speech, in my opinion was a Civil Rights victory speech......not the ‘call to arms’ that it still gets potrayed as.

The ‘Black’ condition as it is in America today, is on blacks themselves.....and has nothing to do with white people or ‘the man’ or the government. That’s just a fact that most troubled minorites still can’t accept.

“came from struggling families like mine”

Oh yeah they struggled. Did not learn much though as has been reported in the Brit press. Seems her momma ordering around the staff overthere, barking at them it is said. BTW, looking at the picture of the momma law getting off the plane, I got the distinct impression of someone like Da Mamma on the old amos and andy show: the “ole battle axe.”
