The Russian zeal for universal empire under Russian rule is a given. For Ukrainians to bury their heads in the sand was imprudent. For them to give the Crimea up without a shot is, frankly, about the most cowardly display ever seen since Edward Benes handed the Sudetenland over to Germany without resistance.

It’s not an accident Ukraine was prostrate militarily. That’s exactly the way Putin wanted it and his man Yanukovych was running the show.

Apparently Ukraine asked for military aid and the kenyan and the EU refused. I doubt they even have enough ordnance on hand to support a sustained engagement against the Russians.

It really wasn’t a hard decision for Ukraine not engage militarily once they realized they would run out of ammo in 7 days or whatever.

It was an equally easy decision for the Afghans to go up against Russian artillery, tanks, helicopter gunships and ground attack aircraft, armed only with 19th century muzzle-loading jezail rifles and WWI-era Lee Enfield bolt action rifles. It wasn't until they showed they were willing to stand and fight by taking serious casualties that foreign sponsors jumped in with significant material assistance.

I don't think *anyone* has enough. Maybe China, only because they have so many soldiers, or NK. USSR was manufacturing, warehousing and rotating mountains of ammo, shells, rockets, and other weapons. Well packaged, stable ammo in a spam can can be stored for a very long time.

But, most importantly, neither side is willing to shoot and kill to reach their goals. Let's hope it stays this way, even if some base commanders are insistent on "defending" an indefensible position.

Additionally, this is a good example of the Army command missing in action. Often warring sides go to great pains to suppress the enemy's command and control. Here Russians got it for free, without even trying :-)
