There is a shortage of class 1 truck drivers on a national basis. Many of the national companies are advertising on the radio and offering signing bonuses. The recession hit the trucking industry pretty hard. Now there is a shortage of trucks and drivers. That along with the govt restriction on hours and diesel increases has caused trucking rates to increase dramatically in some areas of the country.

I would have suspected that the drop in consumption would have cost a lot of truckers their jobs; I guess the government restrictions you mention prevented that.
