Planning could hold key to disappearance of Flight MH370

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Whether by accident or design, whoever reached across the dimly lit cockpit of a Malaysia Airlines jet and clicked off a transponder to make Flight MH370 vanish from controllers' radars flew into a navigational and technical black hole.

By choosing one place and time to vanish into radar darkness with 238 others on board, the person - presumed to be a pilot or a passenger with advanced knowledge - may have acted only after meticulous planning, according to aviation experts.

Understanding the sequence that led to the unprecedented plane hunt widening across two vast tracts of territory north and south of the Equator is key to grasping the motives of what Malaysian authorities suspect was hijacking or sabotage.

"Whoever did this must have had lots of aircraft knowledge, would have deliberately planned this, had nerves of steel to be confident enough to get through primary radar without being detected and been confident enough to control an aircraft full of people," a veteran airline captain told Reuters.

Almost sounds like a military operation... waaaaay past the 'Atta' level of competence.

Turkmenistan ranks second to last in the world for press freedom, second only to North Korea. And, it’s 89% Muslim and formerly under the boot of the Soviets. It would probably be a good place to hide a plane and hatch a terror plot.

On the other hand, he didn’t have to have nerves of steel if he had reconciled himself to dying for jihad and claiming his 72 virgins.

If he manages to complete whatever his mission was, fine, then he advanced the cause of Allah, but if he was shot down or had to crash the plane on the way, then that’s also fine, as he gets his 72 virgins and kills a lot of infidel Chinese and some squish muslims.

That is exactly why you steal a 777 and than use it days later to sneak a 10 Megaton device into friendly airspace in the same manner you used to take the plane.

Writer mentions Xinjiang Province as a possible landing zone. Wikipedia describes it:

Xinjiang (Uyghur: شىنجاڭ‎, ULY: Shinjang; Mandarin pronunciation: [ɕíntɕjɑ́ŋ]; Chinese: 新疆; pinyin: Xīnjiāng), officially Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,[3] is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China in the northwest of the country.

This really thickens the plot, as just a day or two after the plane went missing, Uyghur terrorist group claimed that they were responsible. That particular piece of news came and went with no followup. Uyghurs are the unruly Chinese muslims who are at odds with the People's REpublic gubmint.

Just exactly who were the Chinese passengers on that plane?

I would imagine the pilot was probably dead by then.

I’ve thought it was the copilot all along, but I think he would have needed help from outside of the cockpit. I wonder where that came from.

Having flown cargo for most of my flying career, most of my flying has been a night. I can attest that late at night controllers a sleepy, nodding off, or new guys being trained. This masking technique is and has been used to sneak around other that friendly airspace. There was not significant weather in the area and it would have been easy to slip up behind the Singapore flight and maintain visual separation. I would bet, that simulator was used to practice the intercept, and masking technique. He was knowegleble of the comings and goings of the usual boring day to day operation of the aviation community. The pilot had this in mind for a long long time

I believe your link on this is correct! That plane piggybacked to another planes shadow ID and that 777 better be found fast because the plans of whoever high-jacked it could more than likely be devastating!

If the pilot followed this plan in this flight traffic corridor, wouldn’t the two planes, one closely following the other, be in the sight line of other air traffic?

Even if the second plane was flying dark, if sunrise over the Bay of Bengal was about 6 am local, wouldn’t the two planes be visible from, say 5:30 am local time onward, by other aircraft flying in that corridor?

What are the chances of not being seen from 5:30 to 8:10 am when the last satellite ping occurred?

If we here on FR can make sense of this , I damn sure hope someone in the alphabet community is on this, and tasking every asset we have to have a look at that area.
I've never been near the place but I seem to remember that it's mostly flat desert, almost like a dry lake.
You could land that 777 anywhere
