Investigators have said someone on board the plane first disabled one of its communications systems — the Aircraft and Communications Addressing and Reporting System, or ACARS — about 40 minutes after takeoff.
Around 14 minutes later, the transponder that identifies the plane to commercial radar systems was also shut down. The fact that both systems went dark separately offered strong evidence that the plane's disappearance was deliberate.
On Sunday, Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said at a news conference that that the final, reassuring words from the cockpit — "All right, good night" — were spoken to air traffic controllers after the ACARS system was shut off. Whoever spoke did not mention any trouble on board.

They chose to go dark right at the hand-off point between Malaysian ATC and Vietnamese, maximizing the time before they would be missed. Then they turned west to minimize tracking by military radar. Then probably northwest towards a destination somewhere in the 'stans.
There remains the problem of Indian and other military radar along the way. How do they react to non-transponding blips? Perhaps, Captain Zaharie tail-gated a legitimate flight for a ways. ATC would see the legitimate flight's squawk. Military radar would see the legitimate squawk along with a slightly brighter blip?
According to later reports the last words recorded were as follows: “Famous last words!”
No doubt it was one of the pilots. But which one? Was it the 53 year old father of three, aviation enthusiast and political opponent of the current Malaysian leadership? Or was it the 26 year old well connected pampered co pilot who fancies himself a stud and who’s father is well connected politically?Hunch: The 26 year old came on to one of those hot flight attendants and she told him in no uncertain terms to get lost. He was probably angry and humiliated. Young men in that condition do silly and impulsive things. He probably went jihadist and thought if he killed his mostly infidel Chinese passengers, he would be a martyr and get his 72 virgins. Investigators should interview Malaysian flight attendants to learn the real deal about these pilots. Actually probably will never know what really happened but the Malaysian government no doubt will blame the older pilot.
There was an FR post earlier today (which has since been pulled) in which an apparent FR aviation expert informed us that the ACARS sends data ONLY on significant events (gear-up, gear-down, achieving cruise) and NEVER on time. So the reports that it sent out data every half hour are wrong - it would not be expected to send out more data until gear-down (which didn’t happen).

Why not transmit relevant operational data, along with cockpit voice recordings to the satellite, every 60 seconds or something, and do away with the boxes?
The airline companies can record the whole thing and toss them out after a safe landing, or keep them for a week or something.
It's bound to be less traffic than the legions of twits.
Hello Izzy. You got that right. There was no indication that the ACARS was turned off. The last ACARS data downlink was at cruise initiation at 1:07. It’s next scheduled data downlink should have been at geardown. No geardown means no ACARS downlink. That is the way it is supposed to work.

Somewhat suspicious, to say the least...
Reportedly, they turned off ACARS first, before the transponder. What they neglected to do, however, was also to turn off the satellite radio system that ACARS uses. It pings the geosynchronous satellite from time to time, even if it has no traffic, and the satellite is able to gauge the airplane's distance, but not its direction, from the ping timing. That is what those circular arcs on the map are based upon.

The plane did not take off with any additional fuel, the press conference is told.
Another journalist asks about reports that the pilot’s family moved out of their home in the days before the flight. The police say that is not correct.
They confirmed they took a flight simulator from the pilot’s home.
It is possible that signals received from the plane after it lost contact with ground control could have been sent while the plane was on the ground, so long as it had electrical power, officials add.
That tomnod.com imagery is definitely the wreckage, and I think I even see a life raft and a paddle, even. Not joking.
I know nothing about aviation, so bear with me: Is there any legitimate reason why a pilot would turn off the transponder while a plane is in flight?
