I saw a post where someone hypothesized that the plane would be painted and loaded with a nuke or explosives and flown into U.S. airspace and detonated. But how about just filled with innocent passengers and flown in so we shot it down and kill the passengers? Just a thought.

Myanmar (Burma) has an extremely controlled media, is close to the place plane disappeared, has brutal military regime in power that might like to have a 777. They do NOT like muzzies, so this requires thinking in a new direction, but the ability to land there without fear the citizens would turn them in is, I think, unparalleled among countries within range.
