Sam Adams Pulls Its Sponsorship of St Patrick's Day Parade Over Gay Rights Boston parade organisers failed to reach an agreement with gay rights advocacy group, causing beer brewer to withdraw support

14 March 2014

The New York parade organisers have also come under fire for their policy toward LGBT people.

The maker of Sam Adams beer says it is withdrawing its sponsorship of Boston’s St Patrick’s Day parade a day after negotiations to allow gay groups to march broke down.

Boston Beer Co said in a statement Friday that it is disappointed that an agreement couldn’t be reached between the gay rights advocacy group MassEquality and parade organizers that would have allowed gay veterans to march. The parade is scheduled for Sunday.

UGH I feel the same exact way! By gosh ya cant have the military, the olympics, ethnic parades, scouts, without them making the news wanting their insistent “voice” to be heard. They need everything turned into a platform for gay, queer, lesbian sex advocacy. Things that have nothing to do with sexual orientation whatsoever!!! Shut up already about who you lay down with or screw, the Irish celebrating St. Patricks day dont care! Why should people competing in sports care? why must these dang groups with no higher purpose in life be so consumed with being honored? For what exactly? why can’t straight people have “straight pride day? Like why cant white people have white college or white entertainment tv or white history month? We cant help what color we are, and they say they can
t help who they love so if something’s not a choice worthy of praise why is it “honored with pride?” They say they want to be equal to us, but they really don’t, they want to be set apart.

“It is hard to understand how a community like Boston, where Gay members of the Police force, military and others have, and continue to, put there lives on the line for ALL BOSTONIAN’s, that organizers of The St.Patrick’s Day Parade feel it is just to discriminate against us as a community,”

I weep for my country, on so many different levels.

Took a couple is sips, poured that bottle out and pawned the rest off on unwary guests.

They actually have some good beers, and (when I used to drink) I was a very discerning beer drinker.

However, no beer is good enough to endorse a company that pisses on the moral fabric of the very country that allowed them to become successful.

Good riddance, Sam Adams. Your market share is about to tank.

No beer is that important.

Perhaps Sam Adams is the beer preferred by the homosexual crowd, so there will be no change in their sales and consumption.

There are many other brands of beer as good as, or better, than Sam Adams. I found it a little pricey for an ordinary beer. I cannot quit because I never started after the first taste test. Good luck to them!

I could care less what those creepy fags do. I hope they drown themselves in Sam Adams beer or attract aids, whatever. Like many other Freepers, I am sick of hearing about this crap.

I have my case of Guinness already cooled down. No more Sam Adams for me. I’m starting to think I live in a forced re-education camp. This is no longer American.

No Sam Adams for me -- Mr. Koch, you'll be losing business because of this PC crap.

The real Sam Adams would be rolling over in his grave.

The average homosexual freaks out if he has a spot on his new outfit, if his nails are not manicured to perfection, if he is not clean shaven, if his clothes are not fashionable and matching, if the room is not cleaned to perfection!
Yet these same people have no problem with getting human digestive waste on their privates on a nightly basis.

The former is a psychological refuge from the latter. Cause and effect.

that would have allowed gay veterans

This whole thing is so weird! And The Guardian is covering what should be merely a local Boston story? BTW, the LGBT (or "Giblets," as someone called them) petitioned for a group of 20 gay veterans to march. Turns out, there was only one veteran (purported veteran?) in the group; the other 19 were "gay activists," who wanted to march with rainbow flags and who knows what else. The Allied War Veterns took offense at being lied to, and broke off negotiations.

I don't know why this is all started up again. In the early 90s, there was a big, long battle over this, and the gays sued, and continually won in Massachusetts courts ('nuff said). I believe it was the year the MA Supreme Judicial Court (doesn't that sound like something out of 1984?) found in favor of the gays that the parade organizers cancelled the parade rather than give in. They carried it to the Supreme Court, and in 1995 won a 9-0 opinion (yes, even Bader and Breyer, etc.) that the organizers had the right to decide who would be invited/allowed to march.

Why it's coming up again after almost 20 years, I don't really know. I'm wondering if it's at the urging of Boston's new mayor, Marty Walsh, who hasn't been in long, but who's already making even "Mumbles" Menino (Boston's mayor for 20 years) look almost sane. Menino never marched in the parade (and did march in the June "Gay Pride" parade). Nobody misse him. Why Marty Walsh thinks anyone cares if he doesn't march is, well, just one of life's litte mysteries!

One can only conclude that gay groups make a lot of political contributions . . .

I ran a big marketing group once. I’ll never understand these people getting involved in something that could hurt sales. You don’t put emotions ahead of profit! Sounds cold, but that is rule number one. In this case to risk sales to millions of customers because of a 5% demographic is marketing insanity. They should just “shut up and brew!”

I’ll never understand any business that seeks a global clientele, or entertainers seeking global audiences, taking a public stand on these stupid minority issues.
They only succeed to tick off 50% of their potential revenue source, (in this case, 97%), forever. Seems like a bad business decision.

Next time you’re at the grocery store, drop a six of any Sam Adams into your grocery cart. When you get to the register and you put the six on the conveyor, proclaim in a loud voice to spouse “Sam Adams? No queer beer under my roof!” Return six to cooler, swap for something else.
