Europe’s far-left are set to outnumber the Liberals in the next European Parliament, according to a pan-EU opinion poll published on Wednesday (5 March).
In the second of a series of fortnightly forecasts in the three months before Europe’s 400 million voters go to the ballot booths from 22-25 May, Pollwatch Europe forecasts that the Parliament’s leftist GUE group would see its number of MEPs swell to 67 seats and become the third largest group in the assembly.
For their part, the Liberals would be reduced to 61 seats, well down on the 85 seats they secured five years ago.
The poll, which is based on national surveys from all 28 EU countries, is the latest indication that the Liberals will lose their status as the Parliament’s “kingmakers”. …

This is a problem that the soft left always has and a mistake they always make.
They assume that those farther left than they will be kind to them when the revolution comes not realizing they will be the first to be fitted with blindfolds and offered cigarettes.

From what I understand on their spectrum “Liberals” generally fall slightly to the left (with a few righties thrown in that still believe in “free-market (classical) liberalism”.

Just how communist are these far leftists. What groups were their antecedents?
I was speaking to a young coworker this week and the topic was Crimea and Putin. He was familiar with Hitler and WWII, (somewhat) but when I told him that Napolean suffered the same fate as Hiltler when he tried to conquer Russia, he had not a clue who Napolean was. Yep, public education and college trained.
So I guess he had not a clue about the Crimean War and how that history might be shaping Russia’s actions?

You are correct. It happens -every- time.
More like social democrats. You can’t be a classic liberal and approve of the government in Brussels, since it’s the very thing that Montesquieu warned about—in its case, both executive and legislative power combined in the unelected European Commission, and an elected unicameral parliament that has no power whatsoever to write laws.
I suspect that many of these leftist groups are more Marxist than Social Democrat (of old). The Soviets never stopped planting their operatives and money inside European parties and chosen individuals.
Remember, nearly every country in Europe had a Moscow-aligned (and directed, funded, staffed) Communist Party, with the biggest being the French (Marchand, etc) and then the Italian CP. Greeks were led by Theodorakis, Melina Mecourie, and the Andreas family. Portugal had Soares for a while. West German CP was an arm of the East German SPD.
Strong remnants of CPs in Hungary and Romania.
Maoist parties seem to be very small to almost non-existent.
Trotskyites have phone-booth parties with the exception of England where the Socialist Workers are strong.
Smaller CP’s in Scandinavia.
In other words, the Left is better organized, funded, and staffed with professional organizers than the liberal and conservatives. Too much fragmentation on the Center/Right which allows the united Left (with the Red-Greens aligned with them), to get Parliament seats and offices.
