Breaking: Romeike Family granted ‘indefinite deferred status’ and can stay in United States

Today, a Supervisor with the Department of Homeland Security called a member of our legal team to inform us that the Romeike family has been granted “indefinite deferred status”. This means that the Romeikes can stay in the United States permanently (unless they are convicted of a crime, etc.)

This is an incredible victory that can only be credited to our Almighty God.

We also want to thank those of who spoke up on this issue–including that long ago White House petition. We believe that the public outcry made this possible while God delivered the victory.

Via Home School Legal Defense Association . Michael Farris, chairman for the Home School Legal Defense Association, announced Tuesday afternoon that a supervisor with the Department of Homeland Security said that a Morristown family has been granted “indefinite deferred status.”

Essentially this means that Uwe and Hannelore Romeike and their children can stay in the United States permanently unless they commit a crime or otherwise violate the terms of their status.

The Romeikes immigrated to America from Germany after running afoul of a German law requiring children attend public school or an approved private school offering the state-approved curriculum. The Romeikes, conservative Christians who objected to several parts of the state curriculum, preferred to home school their children.

In refusing to send their children to public school, the Romeikes racked up heavy fines and faced the threat of having their children removed from their home. They left for America before that could happen.

Once in Morristown, they began the long process of seeking political asylum, which was initially granted in 2010, but lost on appeal. In the four years since, the case worked its way to the steps of the Supreme Court which Monday announced it would not hear the case, leaving several of the Romeikes’ supporters in fear that the family would be deported.

Roughly 24 hours later, that was no longer a fear.

The fact that Tennesseans were up in arms over this, vowing civil disobedience, seems to be overlooked on this thread as a reason why this ruling against the Romeike family has been overturned. Hats off to the Tennesseans who rallied for these foks!

I was going to make this point. It's not coincidence that this deferral occurred after there was the threat of strong ground-level push-back.

Conservatives take note.

something to keep in mind as everyone (rightly) celebrates:

“Deferred Status” is the same thing being done with the “Dreamers” under DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) ... which a lot of people here on FR and elsewhere opposed as backdoor amnesty.

So while this is a very good thing on the micro level, its a brilliant move by the Obama Admin because on the macro level we’re going to see it thrown in our faces for continued opposition to the other “deferred” action/prosecution policies Obama is famous for.

Red staters should not let this die, legs need to be put on this. The very fact that Holder attempted to do this to this family is political dynamite. Holder must have known this causing him to back off.

Somebody in the administration made an executive decision to get rid of this PR bomb before it could hurt the Democrats.

Why was this taken out of news and breaking news? Many of us on FR have been following this case regarding fundamental liberties....and this is totally new information and completely unexpected....this is the very definition of Breaking News, is it not?!

A reasonable case can be made that people brought here as babies and raised here need not be sent back.

They could have granted these poor folks asylum long ago, in fact the courts did just that. The administration went out of their way to get their asylum overturned and put them through hell for three years, taking their attempts to deport them all the way to the supreme court. These people lose at the supreme court and then the next day the administration grants them deferred action so they can help them put a conservative face on the administrative abuse of power they’re using to informally implement immigration reform.

I’m happy for the family, but don’t freepers understand when they’re being played?

Re: my comment that this is political dynamite and legs need to be put on this. Think about it, folks, Holder and Obama allowing illegals to flood into the country vs this one Christian family from Germany. Conservative politicos should jump on this big time.

This is good news. Unfortunately the precedent has been established that religious persecution by a nation’s education system is no grounds for political asylum. No other families need apply.

Bingo!

The timing shows that this was exactly what the White House wanted: a legal precedent that homeschooling is not an automatic right to enter the U.S., without the publicity of deporting a sympathetic family. So they had this paperwork all ready to go, and filed it the day after SCOTUS declined the case.

I have no issue with that as one of several different legitimate arguments that can be made.

I was speaking on it as matter of political mechanics. We can now expect that our approval and celebration of this deferred action will be used to attack any future opposition by us to deferred action(s) on other matters.

“The Lord Almighty has answered our prayers.”

Tremendous news indeed. As the Good Book says: ‘The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.’

This is the family for which Glenn Beck said their deportation would happen “over my dead body”.

I’m glad something like that didn’t have to come to a test.....

These are the Dreamers pro-amnesty groups should have supported vocally.
