He was pretty vocal when he disliked a film.

He went after easy targets (Rob Schneider, David Spade, etc.) and lapped up whatever the big stars and studios dished out.

He's dead now and will soon be forgotten, so if all goes well we'll never have to discus this ever again.

He disliked quite a few big budget films. He’ll be remembered the same way that Manny Farber and Pauline Kael are remembered.

Actually, Borges, you were. In post # 96, you said:

“A lot of people in the Arts community don’t care...”

You went from, “A lot...”, to, “...few...” There’s quite a difference.

You have contradicted yourself throughout this conversation. I said Al Gore was presented with an Oscar. You said he was not. When I provided proof, you tried to sidestep that detail.

I recognized early in this thread that you weren’t really interested in carrying on an honest dialog. I know that you wish to shill for Hollywood. Thankfully....on FR you’re free to say whatever you wish as long as we engage in civil discourse.

Best Regards,
TJI

A lot in the relative sense. If you don’t think many academy members don’t take the oscars seriously you’re fooling yourself. You’re the one shilling for them here. Complete with childish ‘prove it’ calls. I named two.

As for Gore it’s a muddy issue. The doc oscar goes to the makers of the film which he was not. Ive never heard anyone refer to him as an Oscar winner. The film Rocky won Oscars but Stallone did not.

Borges said: “You’re the one shilling for them here”

The thread and article is a critique of Hollywood. No shilling whatsoever. As a matter of fact, some of my criticisms were:

“Cory starred in several films. If the Oscars are about movies, why did Al Gore win an award?”

“I see a double standard.”

“... and yet I still question the sincerity. Dennis Farina was worthy of recognition. No Jean Stapleton?”

“As I stated previously, Hollywood is all about double standards.”

“The Oscar’s are a joke. It’s Hollywood’s big Selfie.”

As you can see, Borges, these are just some examples refuting your “shilling” accusation.

You also stated: “If you don’t think many academy members don’t take the oscars seriously you’re fooling yourself.”

That’s ironic and interesting given the fact that you said this:

“A lot of people in the Arts community don’t care about these sort of awards and don’t take the voting seriously. It’s been that way from the start.”

Borges, you continually contradict yourself. You’ll say that “...people in the Arts community don’t care about these sorts of awards and don’t take voting seriously.”

In the VERY NEXT breath you said,

“If you don’t think many academy members don’t take the oscars seriously you’re fooling yourself.”

Who’s being childish?

What trivial nitpicking. I don’t even know what point you’re trying to make. I think it was the fact that Corey whathisname was left out out of the Memoriam segment despite the fact that seven years ago a documentary with Al Gore won an Oscar? LOL In any case have a pleasant day.

Trivial nitpicking? I disagreed with you on several points, and asked you to substantiate your assertions. You never did. Rather, you dodged the questions and contradicted yourself. You grew frustrated then called me childish. Nothing nitpicky about that, nor is it nitpicky to express opinions and critiques concerning the thread. After all, that’s what public discourse on Free Republic is all about.

Borges said: “I don’t even know what point you’re trying to make.”

Apparently you’re the only one on this thread who failed to understand what I was talking about. It’s crystal clear to everyone else.

If this is so childish and nitpicky, it’s a wonder you bothered to visit this thread and hang around for so long.

What assertion? That a segment of the artistic community finds competitive awards like these distasteful and dislikes participating. They say it in interviews all the time. It’s common knowledge. George C Scott was another one who hated the concept of the Oscars and never attended.
