The ex-Israeli soldier who led a Kiev fighting unit

He calls his troops “the Blue Helmets of Maidan,” but brown is the color of the headgear worn by Delta — the nom de guerre of the commander of a Jewish-led militia force that participated in the Ukrainian revolution. Under his helmet, he also wears a kippah.

Delta, a Ukraine-born former soldier in the Israel Defense Forces, spoke to JTA Thursday on condition of anonymity. He explained how he came to use combat skills he acquired in the Shu’alei Shimshon reconnaissance battalion of the Givati infantry brigade to rise through the ranks of Kiev’s street fighters. He has headed a force of 40 men and women — including several fellow IDF veterans — in violent clashes with government forces.

Rabbi Moshe Azman ... confirmed Delta’s identity and role in the still-unfinished revolution.

(snip)

As platoon leader, Delta says he takes orders from activists connected to Svoboda, an ultra-nationalist party that has been frequently accused of anti-Semitism and whose members have been said to have had key positions in organizing the opposition protests.

“I don’t belong [to Svoboda], but I take orders from their team. They know I’m Israeli, Jewish and an ex-IDF soldier. They call me ‘brother,’” he said. “What they’re saying about Svoboda is exaggerated, I know this for a fact. I don’t like them because they’re inconsistent, not because of [any] anti-Semitism issue.”

The commanding position of Svoboda in the revolution is no secret, according to Ariel Cohen, a senior research fellow at the Washington D.C.-based Heritage Foundation think tank.

“The driving force among the so-called white sector in the Maidan are the nationalists, who went against the SWAT teams and snipers who were shooting at them,” Cohen told JTA.

Still, many Jews supported the revolution and actively participated in it.

IDF veteran leads demonstrators against riot police. Should be interesting to hear if he is invited to help plan the upcoming operations against Russian invasion forces, given the alleged general mobilization order that has gone out, potentially putting 1m Ukrainian fighting men under arms.

« The commanding officer at the Russian military academy (the equivalent of a 4-star general in the U.S.) gave a lecture on Potential Problems and Military Strategy. At the end of the lecture, he asked if there were any questions.

An officer stood up and asked, “Will there be a third world war? And will Russia take part in it?”

The general answered both questions in the affirmative.

Another officer asked, “Who will be the enemy?”

The general replied, “All indications point to China.”

Everyone in the audience was shocked. A third officer remarked, “General, we are a nation of only 150 million, compared to the 1.5 billion Chinese. Can we win at all, or even survive?”

The general answered, “Just think about this for a moment: In modern warfare, it is not the quantity of soldiers that matters but the quality of an army’s capabilities. For example, in the Middle East we have had a few wars recently where 5 million Jews fought against 150 million Arabs, and Israel was always victorious.”

After a small pause, yet another officer - from the back of the auditorium asked, “Do we have enough Jews?” »

The old joke may be just a bit off...

Bibi Netanyahu is on his way to a meeting with Obama today.

The major thrusts of US foreign policy at this point are against Israel from the nuclear deal with Russia’s ally in Iran to the US effort in conjunction with the EU to force Israel to expel thousands of Jews from their homes to create “peace” with the Palestinians.

A conflict with Russia could help to alleviate this pressure by distracting Obama-Kerry etc. from their efforts against Israel.

It is interesting to read about ex-IDF being involved in the effort to remove the pro-Russia government in Ukraine that was the trigger for the Russian response we are seeing now.

In the 1920’s there were Zionists working against the British rule, establishing ties with Mussolini.

Early on there were Jews joining the Mussolini party.

How did that turn out?

I realize the Right Sector/Svoboda are the minority, but they are leading direct action part of the revolution.

In 1905 the Bolsheviks were a small minority. The Tsar was deposed and no one took them seriously.
