Is polygamy the cause of Muslim violence?
Human Events ^ | February 18, 2014 | William Tucker

Posted on 02/23/2014 1:15:33 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Syria is submerged in civil war. The Sunni and the Shi’ia of Iraq are renewing their 1300-year-old conflict. Libyan rebels have shut down the nation’s oil industry. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood has been suppressed and is resorting to terrorism. Pakistan is a cauldron of violence and assassinations. In short, the Muslim world, as usual, is at war with itself.

This is not a contemporary phenomenon. Islam has been attacking its neighbors ever since the Prophet Mohammed received the Koran from the Angel Gabriel in the 7th century. Within 50 years of his death, Muslim armies had conquered the known world from Spain to Afghanistan. The Moguls invaded India, setting off a conflict that persists today. The Ottoman Empire besieged Europe for hundreds of years before its collapse in the 20th century. As historian Samuel Huntington has written, Islam has always had “bloody borders.”

Is there any explanation for this? Is it temperament or history? Is it the inevitable fight over scarce resources? Or, as Muslim cultures would insist, is it because Islam has always been surrounded by hostile neighbors?

In my book, Marriage and Civilization, I offer a novel explanation as to why Islam has always been at war with itself and others. It is because Islam it is the only major religious culture that embraces polygamy.

Polygamy? What does that have to do with anything? Am I suggesting that because some minor sheik outside Baghdad takes two wives, two young Muslim brothers in Massachusetts feel compelled to blow up the Boston Marathon?

Well, yes. In any human society there are approximately the same number of men and women. Under monogamy, which limits each man to one wife, everyone gets a fair chance to marry. When powerful and successful men are allowed to take more than one wife, however, as they are in a polygamous society, this creates a pool of unsuccessful men at the bottom of society who are constantly in conflict with the system.

The history of Islam has been one continuous story of rebel groups off in the desert and deciding that the religion being practiced by the authorities and their harems back in the cities is not the “true Islam.” They come crashing back upon the palaces, overthrowing the leaders (no Ottoman Sultan ever died of natural causes) and establishing a new regime that is just like the old one, where powerful are allowed to take multiple wives.

The Prophet Muhammad had a novel solution to this problem. Go and conquer neighboring societies and requisition their women. If you die in the process, the reward will be even greater – 72 virgins waiting for you in heaven! “Jihad” has been a clever and effective way of redirecting the hostilities of the “bachelor herd” that polygamy inevitably produces.

The fruits of polygamy are visible all over the Middle East. Because women are always in short supply, families can charge a “bride price” to any man who wants to marry their daughter. Because daughters are now worth money, they must be veiled and sequestered so they don’t run off with some callow youth. Older men desperate for wives push down into younger and younger cohorts of the population. Marriages between 35-year-old men and 13-year-old girls become common. (Muhammad’s last wife was age six.)

But the main product of polygamy is a population of angry young men who are ripe recruits for terrorism. The Koran supposedly limits a man to four wives but in countries where there are vast disparities of wealth this is routinely violated. Osama bin Laden’s father, a successful Saudi businessman, had 22 wives and 54 children. The unbalance between unmarried men and the available women in Saudi Arabia is the highest in the world. Is it any wonder that 15 of the 19 September 11th hijackers were Saudi nationals?

Ann Coulter once suggested that we would cure Muslim violence by converting the Islamic world to Christianity. This is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Christianity’s long enforcement of monogamous marriage has obviously played a critical role in establishing the more peaceful civilization of the West. The same can be said for China and India, where the vast majority adhere to monogamy. None of these cultures is plagued with the endless internal violence and outward aggression of Islam.

Converting the Muslim world to Christianity may be out of the question, but persuading it to give up polygamy on the grounds that it creates an inherently unstable society is a task that the rest of the world might be willing to undertake.

There are many other parallels between Mormonism and Islam: the mysterious revelation by an “angel” of sacred texts which no one can find, the blood oath, missionary pilgrimage, etc.

Of the 3 links you provided regarding sex ratios of Indonesia, Cambodia and the Phillipines, only Cambodia indicates a minor surplus of females in the critical 15-24 year age bracket. So there simply aren’t enough females to meet Chinese demand.

Check Qatar, Kuwat, UAE Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia’s sex ratios compared to China. Shockingly they have an even more extreme imbalance that manifests at the critical 15-24 bracket and gets worse with age which indicates that they have a serious problem with violence against women.

[ Women tend to civilize men, especially in a culture that
recognizes and encourages monogamous marriage. ]

Judaism and Christianity both respect strong women.

Both respect women and have a sense of Chivalry towards women, women are not see as “equals” in the liberal sense but are seen as vital co-pilots in the marriage with their own strengths and weaknesses that COMPLEMENT the strengths and weaknesses of the male in the marriage and they are also deeply respected.

I’d say the Quran is the cause.

The mystery novelist Anne Perry is a Mormon. As a teenager, she was also a key player in a murder in New Zealand.

There are some interesting inclusions from Mormon history in her books.

... if it weren’t for the “angry man” problem ...

Right, if women were naturally 4 or 5 times as numerous as men ... but they aren't.

With polygamy, society can never grow beyond the most basic element, mother than children. They don't form a patriarch-based clan: as soon as the sperm-donor is out of the picture, the society devolves to mother-and-sons.

If you take another look at the Book of Genesis, you'll see it very clearly. There would never have been a "People of Israel" without the enslavement in Israel, because they would have broken down in a very brief period into the Sons of Leah, the Sons of Rachel, and the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah aligned with one of the legal wives. Give it a generation or two, and you have the sons of Leah and a few cadet-branch flies they swat occasionally.

Yes Ive read A Study in Scarlet

The contents are typical of how the Mormons behaved in Utah Territory and everywhere they went..

They were never persecuted for their religious beliefs..

The Mormons persecuted the Christians, murdered and cheated and stole from farmers and burnt their homes, and kidnapped girls for their harems..

the Christians fought back and protected themselves and their daughters..

It was the Mormons who started much of the trouble in NY, OH, MO, IL and UT...

There were Mormons still living peacefully in those starts when Brigham Young decided to sell the Nauvoo Mormon temple to the Catholics and move his followers to the Utah territory so that he and his cronies could break the decency laws of the United States and practice polygamy in another country, Utah was Mexico until about that time..

Mormons have never “got rid of polygamy”

they just went underground and lied to the American government..

Woodruff still lived polygamously and married at least one more “wife” AFTER 1890...

In the early 19002 there were at least 2 more “proclamations” declaring they would stop having extra wives but it was just a joke..

After 1890 the Mormons in Utah knowingly elected and sent a guy who had at least THREE wives to congress ..

SEVEN MILLION citizens from around the country signed petitions that he not be sworn in and seated but sent back to Utah...

and so he was..

The last Mormon prophet to practice polygamy didn’t die until 1945 so there were polygamous marriages amongst the leaders in SLC till at least then...

Mormons were often on the receiving end of violent persecution before 1845
____________________________________

No they weren’t ...

The Mormons were the terrorists..

Joey Smith wanted to be a “second Mohammad”

in 1838 Joey Smith said that he would be like Mohammad when he converted the Christians to Mormonism or he killed them “It will be Joseph Smith or the sword”

the Christians defended themselves..

Joey Smith had his own private guerrilla army of 5,000+..

What town in the 1840s needed that many LEOs ???

the US army only had 8,000 for the whole country..

as the self crowned king of the Mormons and the mayor of Nauvoo and the Lt General of the Mormon army, Smith petitioned congress to arm and equip an army of 100,000 just for his own personal use..

read up about the Danites and the death threats from the Mormons to the citizens of Missouri..

Governor Boggs was forced to give the Mormons an ultimatum, live in MO peacefully or leave..

Lots of Mormons stopped killing and stealing from the Christians and settled down in MO and lived peaceful lives..

Nobody persecuted or molested them..

as for your magical 1845 date..read up about Mountain Meadows Massacre ..1857

Is polygamy the cause of Muslim violence?

It was DEFINITELY the cause of some MORMON violence!!!

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 132
51–57, Emma Smith is counseled (commanded) to be faithful and true; 58–66, Laws governing the plurality of wives are set forth.

51 Verily, I say unto you: A commandment I give unto mine handmaid, Emma Smith, your wife, whom I have given unto you, that she stay herself and partake not of that which I commanded you to offer unto her; for I did it, saith the Lord, to aprove you all, as I did Abraham, and that I might require an offering at your hand, by covenant and sacrifice.
52 And let mine handmaid, Emma Smith, areceive all those that have been given unto my servant Joseph, and who are virtuous and pure before me; and those who are not pure, and have said they were pure, shall be destroyed, saith the Lord God.
53 For I am the Lord thy God, and ye shall obey my voice; and I give unto my servant Joseph that he shall be made ruler over many things; for he hath been afaithful over a few things, and from henceforth I will strengthen him.
54 And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and acleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be bdestroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.
55 But if she will not abide this commandment, then shall my servant Joseph do all things for her, even as he hath said; and I will bless him and multiply him and give unto him an ahundredfold in this world, of fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, houses and lands, wives and children, and crowns of beternal lives in the eternal worlds.
56 And again, verily I say, let mine handmaid aforgive my servant Joseph his trespasses; and then shall she be forgiven her trespasses, wherein she has trespassed against me; and I, the Lord thy God, will bless her, and multiply her, and make her heart to brejoice.

Whatever HAPPENED to Emma???

Eliza was a devout Mormon.

At age 38, she became Joseph Smith's 14th plural wife (in addition to Smith's lawful wife, Emma).

In 1842, after learning Eliza was pregnant, Emma Smith beat Eliza with a broomstick and
knocked her down a flight of stairs, causing Eliza to miscarry Smith's baby.
Wow!!

I guess ol' Emma got VAPORIZED by GOD!!!

We know that multiply him thing sure didn't work out!

JESUS: Hey Smith! Remember that boast you made about doing more than even I had done to hold the 'church' together?

JOSEPH SMITH: Where am I?

JESUS: Don't you remember? A few seconds ago you were in that jail.

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh; yeah; but where am I NOW?

JESUS: Don't you remember? Does bang - bang ring a bell?

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh; yeah - that crummy gun I had was about USELESS!

JESUS: I hope you left instructions on how to hold your church together.

JOSEPH SMITH: Dang! I knew there was SOMETHING I was forgetting!

JESUS: Looks like there's a power struggle going on down there.

JOSEPH SMITH: Yeah; there was always SOMEone who wanted the power that I held - especially over the LADIES - wink wink.

JESUS: No need to worry about that now; remember what my friend Matthew wrote down?

JOSEPH SMITH: This? “At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven” (Matthew 22:30)

JESUS: That's it.

JOSEPH SMITH: I thought that was mistranslated.

JESUS: Nah - it was right.

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh well; it was fun while it lasted. My buds will still get it on with the girls.

JESUS: Uh; I'm sorry; in just a few more years; your followers will cavein to the United States government and abandon the 'Eternal Covenant' that you came up with.

JOSEPH SMITH: ME!? YOU are the one that told me to do that!

JESUS: Sorry; but you must have mistranslated what I told you. What part of Do NOT commit ADULTERY did you not understand?

JOSEPH SMITH: mumble....

JESUS: What did you say?

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh, nothing.

JESUS: Well; it was interesting talking to you; but now I must get back to perparing a place for those who believe in Me.

JOSEPH SMITH: Oh, yeah; the Celestial Kingdom.

JESUS: No...

JOSEPH SMITH: The Telestial one?

JESUS: Nope.

JOSEPH SMITH: SUREly not the TERRESTRIAL one!!

JESUS: Nope. Didn't you read that the mind of man had NOT conceived of it? Paul wrote it down in 1 Corinthians 2:9.

JOSEPH SMITH: I thought that was mistranslated.

JESUS: No; it wasn't.

JOSEPH SMITH: You SURE?

JESUS: Yes. Now I must be going: what did you say your name was again?

JOSEPH SMITH: Joseph Smith.

JESUS: Hmmmm. According to my Heavenly FAITHbook, you didn't sign in as one of my friends - sorry, I never knew you.

JOSEPH SMITH: But....

Mormons were often on the receiving end of violent persecution before 1845, culminating in the battle of Nauvoo (Ill.) in 1844, eventually forcing the Mormons to flee to Utah.

This being the first sentence of your comment makes ones believe; perhaps; the MORMONs were innocent darlings that did NOTHING to bring these acts upon them.

No; they were NOT 'forced' to flee anywhere!

Plently of them stayed behind and FLOURISHED in Nauvoo.

They are STILL there!

Before placing exclusive blame on Mormons in Utah for violence, one question that seems relevant is to ask what is the proximate cause of the Mormons to be living in Utah in the first place.

How about an internal POWER STRUGGLE over who was gonna lead the 'Saints' after JS got hisself all shot up!

It might be interesting to study how much getting rid of polygamy had to do with that, if anything.

They MORMONs wanted to be a state - the gummint said NO! if you've going to cleave to POLYGAMY.

The LDS 'leadership' threw their GOD under the bus.

Inbreeding over fourteen centuries has produced hideous results.

Outbreeding by a selected portion of THIS country's citizens in the last 50 years has produced some amazing results as well!
