Liberals see our disregard for the race issue as racism in and of itself.
Last night Geraldo was scolding O'Reilly for having been just as hard on Obama as he was on Bush, saying that as the nation's first black president, Obama should have received more deference. O'Reilly had treated him as the full equal of the prior white president, and Geraldo was unhappy with that.
I've been put in that position at work on many occasions: if I expect a black employee to follow procedures appropriately, just as I would a white employee, I'm racist. Certain individuals of color (certainly not all) believe that the collective history of racial relations in America should allow them to pick and choose which policies they want to follow, and feel free to disregard the ones they don't like.
Projection is a prominent feature of many mental disorders. OTOH when a liberal experiences white guilt that is not a misplaced emotion.
