The Sochi Olympics are now officially underway, and Ill be pivoting to cover that shortly, but the end of the year results from Rosstat are in and its official: Russia just recorded the first natural population growth since the Soviet Union collapsed. Its true that the amount of growth wasnt a particularly large: a total of 23,000, which amounts to an annual rate of about 0.016%. But when you look at how this compares to Russias recent performance you see that its a pretty astounding turnaround.
Will the momentum of recent years last forever? No. The generation born during the economic chaos and dislocation of the 1990′s is simply too small to maintain the recent increase in the birth rate. Barring an unprecedented increase in fertility, at some point over the next 3-5 years Russia will reenter negative natural population growth.

Yeah but the birth rate will drop soon due to a small cohort that was born in the ‘90s.
SO Vlady is Russia version of Barry White LOL!
‘Be fruitfful and multiply’- it’s not just good advice!
