There was a war on "the People's" Constitutional limits on their elected representatives' use of coercive power to "take" and "redistribute" the people's earnings, under the guise of "helping" some.
Growing a voter base in order to retain power ceded to them by kind-hearted American citizens who could not distinguish between the merits of private charity and the dangers of coercive collective power has brought us to today's debt, deficits and endangered liberty for all citizens.
Perhaps a reading of Congressman Davy Crockett's (TN) experience might be a revealing exercise for those who don't see the dangers of turning over our individual responsibilities to those who promise to "help us."
The current Democrat appeal for "fair share" can be seen as "slavery" by another name. Government "masters" buy votes in exchange for retaining their "master redistributionist" status, while their "voters" yield up freedom for themselves and future generations.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C. S. LewisHear Samuel Adams:
"Is it now high time for the people of this country to explicitly declare whether they will be free men or slaves. It is an important question which ought to be decided. It concerns more than anything in this life. The salvation of our souls is interested in this event. For wherever tyranny is established, immorality of every kind comes in like a torrent, it is in the interest of tyrants to reduce the people to ignorance and vice. - Samuel Adams
And:
The utopian schemes of leveling and a community of goods, are as visionary and impractical as those which vest all property in the crown. These ideas are arbitrary, despotic, and, in our government unconstitutional. - Samuel Adams
“As Rush has often said, the U. S. has the richest poor people in the world.”
BINGO!
The correct solution to poverty was provided a few eons back.
We chose to give a man a fish to feed him for that day instead of providing the means for the man to provide for himself. (Jobs, mandated requirements for degrees, licenses and certifications to get any job that provides a decent income without providing those means to get them, etc.)

You hit the nail on the head.
We are encouraging dependency, instead of self reliance.
For one thing, while we spend trillions of dollars fighting the War on Poverty our own government keeps bringing in reenforcements for the other side.
When you hand out money so that someone can sit around watching TV, they will sit around watching TV. The dirty little secret of reducing poverty is that people need to have a little fear of being poor. They have to be faced with the reality that if they don’t work, they may be homeless and starve. When you take that away, a significant subset of the population without an internal work drive decides its just fine to live off the dole.
Poor people are not fat.
Fat people who do not work are pets.

Another good post on this same (really, related) topic “in case you missed it”, entitled: You Can’t Save the World

Poverty and racism are great tools for the hacks with out them they couldn’t stay in office for 20 to 30 years.
“Good Intentions”lost “The War On Poverty”!!Woman were encouraged to have more and more children(out of wedlock)in order to increase their “Benefits”.People weren’t counseled on job-seeking,etc.,etc.,.They were encouraged to stay at home and have babies!!!!!If you give a man a fish, look for him tomorrow; If you TEACH a man to fish!!!This isn’t”ROCKET SCIENCE”(or is it)???????????????
A little over 2000 years ago a very important man said, The poor will always be with us. Which should have tipped us off that a war on it would have been useless.
