Raiderettes (Pro football cheerleaders) suing franchise for wage theft, unfair employment practices
CBS Sports ^ | January 22, 2014 | Mike Singer

With their season long over with, one would think that the Raiders could be spared from bad news this offseason. Alas, it's still the Raiders.

Current and former Raiderettes – yes, the team's cheerleaders – filed a lawsuit on Wednesday claiming that the team engaged in “wage theft and other unfair employment practices,” according to The Mercury News. The suit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, alleges that the Raiders withheld the cheerleaders' pay until after the season, didn't fairly compensate the women for all their hours of work and asked that the cheerleaders pay for many of their own businesses expenses.

Most stunningly, according to lead attorney Sharon Vinick, the Raiderettes make a salary of $1,250 a season – or less than $5 dollars per hour.

The suit also alleges that the Raiderettes have been fined for a series of frivolous errors, including bringing the wrong pop-poms to practice or for failing to bring a yoga mat to workouts.

Flew on a flight full of Raider cheerleaders once and had 6 of them talking around me. Think of the dumbest girl in your high school. And the phrase dumber than a box of rocks.

“Think of the dumbest girl in your high school. And the phrase dumber than a box of rocks.”

That’s a wonderful thing, beautiful, gullible and dumb. I’m just kidding of course. Really.

Must be the ones who didn’t succeed in marrying any of the thugs or team millionaire hangers-on.

Bottom line is there are women lining up who would do it for free. Hard to get decent compensation when that happens. Sorta’ like small town radio. Teenagers will work for free.

I'd like to see the same pitcher before, i.e. sans makeup. Since we can't have it, to get a pitcher in your mind, multiply Wendy by 40 (yes, I did count them.)

A gal from I went to high school with went on to be a Raiderette. Cute and an airhead. It probably was a dream job for her. I wonder what she’s doing now.

When the Raiders left Oakland is when they
first turned to crap. One word......Hollywood.
They lost their working class appeal and became
caricatures of themselves. Nobody bought the
“badass” because it became the image and not
reality. When they came back to Oaktown they bought
the Hollywood image back with them although the
old school bar hopping w/the fans was on it’s way out
anyway due to mega contracts and a change of NFL
player mentality.

"I think most pro cheerleaders do it more for the ego-boost, the brag-factor, and being in a position to meet some very wealthy guys."

Yes. This is NOT exactly "news". I don't know of a pro football cheerleader that makes anything but a paltry wage. Standard is around $100 per game, and it's a LOT of work, too.

Sure they can make $ doing appearances and signing autographs, but no way you can make a living at it.

I think it's mostly prestige.

At least the Raiderettes make more than the Bears, Packers, NY Jets, NY Giants, Lions, and Browns cheerleaders.

Oops, forgot the Steelers. I don’t think they have cheerleaders either.

You’ll have to pour more effort into it before you urn the right to more pitchers:)

Yeah, they do. They feature 2 blacks, and the rest are Polish-Americans….

As a devoted follower of the Houston Texan Cheerleaders, I can authoritatively say “lots of ‘em”.

Part of the training these days is media classes. As a result, it’s not unusual to see half a dozen cheerleader interviews and hear each of them say exactly the same thing. “I’m really excited about having this wonderful opportunity to represent....”

Then again, if the audience is listening to them, they’re not doing it right.

Exactly. She can have her pick of guys. How many red-blooded heterosexual males wouldn't like to be able to say "I'm dating a Raiders cheerleader"?
