“Is the problem with Walmart or the current government that gives out food stamps like candy?”
Which came first, the Wal Mart wage or the govt hand out?
Duh .
Particularly if you're a white male. I have a friend who was bad off, and he found it a challenge.
Seriously, though, its a classic chicken and egg question. Government gives food stamps and Medicaid to WalMart employees because WM pays most of its workers bupkis. If there were no food stamps would WM pay more because it couldnt rely on Uncle Whiskers to subsidize them? Good question.
If there were no food stamps, it would not change WalMart salaries. If anything, there would be MORE people competing for whatever jobs they could get, and salaries would go down. People would work longer hours to make enough money to survive.
Of course, WalMart could bypass the "food stamp" criticism by hiring only students and retirees. Probably get a better class of employees as well. This is what will happen if they raise minimum wage -- places will increase their quality-requirement on new hires, to only hire those who are worth it.
Walmart, like a lot of low margin companies, pay their employees the least they possibly can and still get and keep employees and they were doing this long before the permissive welfare policies of this administration. You might not like it but they seem to be doing this quite well.
The article is based on a democrat/union funded study that shows, miracle of miracles, that Walmart should unionize so the poor down trodden proletariat can get their "fair share" (even if it puts their company out of business). It's the Democrat way comrade.
Interestingly enough she landed a job within a month of losing her unemployment.
