Ernie was one incredible leader.

The sad part of the story is that most of the guys who survived were killed fighting in WW1.

Amundsen's ship Fram was supposed to have been bowl-shaped, so when the ice pressed in on it, the ship popped up and over it. The Endurance, though built of thick oak, had a narrower profile and so ended up being squeezed and crushed by the pack ice.
