The uber fascist hypocrisy of these scum who force us to buy mercury laden light bulbs.

Broken thermostats can release mercury into the air.

Unlike the millions of CFLs the law requires us to buy.

Sponsors say mercury exposure has been shown to impair brain development, with federal estimates suggesting 300,000 to 630,000 infants annually are born in the U.S. with mercury levels high enough to reduce intelligence.

That explains the idiot politicians

The collection goal is 15,500 for 2015, with state conservation officials required to set goals for 2016 through 2023.

What's that in CFLs?

I guess they don't want people making quick and easy motion detector switches.

I recall as a kid we'd somehow get a hold of a small bead of mercury on occasion and we used to play with it.And after all that there's nothing wrong...nothing wrong with me....nothing aaaaarrrrrgggggh!

Punish the makers of mercury thermostats, but pretend like the HAZMAT situation caused by CFL doesn't exist.

This is the same thing as letting eagles be slaughtered by wind farms by the hundreds while punishing the oil industry for the one or eagles they accidentally kill.

The modern American political class is criminally insane. They are the living explanation for historical phenomena like inquisitions, witch trials and yes, Stalin, Pol Pot and The Third Reich. Rapacious lunatics with power.

“New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed a law requiring manufacturers of thermostats with mercury to collect their old temperature controls in an effort to keep mercury out of the environment. “

And just exactly where did mercury come from ?

I love it when they go on about mecury levels in lakes in California only to find out it has come from natural sources. Same with oil leaks off the coast.

Recently, some group went after pharmacuetical companies for having mecury in vaccines. Seemingly, a very small amount of mercury in a vaccine allows certain vaccines to go unrefrigerated. This is extremely important when vaccinated people in Africa, central America, etc. It is hard enough to get vaccines to these places without lugging a fridge along.

I find it hard to believe that were every thermostat in the US to be mishandled that it would cause serious health or environmental impacts.

Same thing with the plastics in canned goods. The plastic lining alledgedly is a carcinogen, but the real numbers show far more would die from botulistic canned goods than would ever die from cancer laced cans.

300,000 to 630,000

If you are going to guess at a number, go big. Make it 300,000,000 to 600,000,000. Oh, because then it would be easy to see you are lying to the people again.

On a side note, the left seems so concern for “the children” yet would have no trouble aborting those same 300,000 to 630,000 children

My first thought as well. The idiots worry about a tiny source of
mercury while ignoring a HUGE source because of their agenda, which has nothing to do with the environment. I suspect that the total amount of mercury vapor in all of those cfl bulbs in aggregate would be staggering if we knew.

The mercury, extracted from thermostats seized from households (under penalty of law) will no doubt be recycled into compact fluorescents light bulbs, that the same citizens subjects, will be compelled to buy. /nearfuture
