Two thoughts:

1.Whatever possessed him to do an interview with GQ?

2. The very recent federal court ruling which suggests that polygamy make in fact be legal..( or rather, that the states have no legal right to prevent it) actually bears witness to the point that Phil was making..

What does it matter? The author in GQ did not smear him. It was GLAAD who did

Because he has never minded speaking his mind about his faith around those that may have different views. He has welcomed that opportunity several times.

I have no doubt he understood what his words would eventually bring. That likely was the point.
