Seriously, shouldn’t the police handle this one? While they shouldn’t make a habit of it, for particularly savage crimes against innocent and helpless victims, the police should arrange for swifter justice, hopefully with “plausible deniability.”

In the old days we used to refer to this as "rendering first aid".

Joseph Wambaugh had a good take on it. An officer discovered a well known violent offender had taken several bullets and was unconscious, so the officer decided that some CPR was in order. Not only did he pump the offender dry, but was seen as something of a hero for his heroic effort.
