With Affordable Care Act, Canceled Policies for New York Professionals
New York Times ^ | December 13, 2013 | ANEMONA HARTOCOLLIS

Many in New York’s professional and cultural elite have long supported President Obama’s health care plan. But now, to their surprise, thousands of writers, opera singers, music teachers, photographers, doctors, lawyers and others are learning that their health insurance plans are being canceled and they may have to pay more to get comparable coverage, if they can find it.

They are part of an unusual informal health insurance system that has developed in New York in which independent practitioners were able to get lower insurance rates through group plans, typically set up by their professional associations or chambers of commerce. That allowed them to avoid the sky-high rates in New York’s individual insurance market, historically among the most expensive in the country.

But under the Affordable Care Act, they will be treated as individuals, responsible for their own insurance policies. For many of them, that is likely to mean they will no longer have access to a wide network of doctors and a range of plans tailored to their needs. And many of them are finding that if they want to keep their premiums from rising, they will have to accept higher deductible and co-pay costs or inferior coverage.

“I couldn’t sleep because of it,” said Barbara Meinwald, a solo practitioner lawyer in Manhattan.

Ms. Meinwald, 61, has been paying $10,000 a year for her insurance through the New York City Bar. A broker told her that a new temporary plan with fewer doctors would cost $5,000 more, after factoring in the cost of her medications.

Ms. Meinwald also looked on the state’s health insurance exchange. But she said she found that those plans did not have a good choice of doctors, and that it was hard to even find out who the doctors were

Ms. Meinwald, I rejoice at the outcome of your rotten ideology. May you pay the Blasio Misery tax next. May you have to sleep under the mountain of plastic trash bags that will soon be accumulating at your front door! May more wisdom come your way!

“I couldn’t sleep because of it,” said Barbara Meinwald, a solo practitioner lawyer in Manhattan.

Wait until she finds out that "insomnia" is not covered under Obamacare.

The money quote: I'm for it. But what's the reality of it?

Liberals never let reality get in the way of their pie in the sky. They don't learn, either. She's still FOR IT!

Another gem: We have to explain that this is the Affordable Care Act; that’s what was put into law. Once they understand, they’re less emotional, but they’re not happy with it.

So they're emotional about it if their evil firm or greedy insurance company did this to them - but if Obama did it, well, they're just not as worked up about it.

Don’t you love it that she’s a lawyer, too? This is a double Schadenfreude.

It is an uncomfortable position for many members of the creative classes to be in. “We are the Obama people,…
Might as well add, "We are the stupid people."

No problem, NY Dems. You voted for B DeBlasio for mayor and he will stop this obvious capitalist imperialist abuse! Obama is working day and night to provide rainbows for us all. As we speak, Obama and DeBlasio are on the phone to whatshisname in No Korea asking him to take the position as new director of health care services in NYC. After that call, Obama will be on the phone to France’s prime minister asking if he will take over management of NYC’s health care finances. Everything will be rainbows in no time. That’s exactly what NYC Dems would do! /sarc

Yes, when you actually bite into the crap sandwich of Liberalism vs. just seeing it on TV, it sucks.

Same thing happens to most of the juveniles you see in "Beyond Scared Straight". It's not bad enough that the place smells and the prison population is dangerous as can be. When they get a taste of prison food, that appears to have more of an impact on these kids.

As mentioned in another thread, if the states start to simply refuse implementation, and of course the Rat states MUST implement, it’s a double whammy for the Rat states since the needed “redistributed” funding is significantly reduced from the masses while the government above forces intolerable regulations. Love it! The ultimate squeeze!

"Shameful, and unforgivable acts by every Democrat who first voted for the Trojan Horse for redistribution called ACA, and then voted again to defeat the Republican measure which warned of and would have prevented these cancellations! Not one of the Dems should escape personal blame for each patient whose life is being negatively impacted. "

And that includes the media - they should be tarred and feathered.

Ms. Meinwald, the lawyer, said she was a lifelong Democrat who still supported better health care for all, but had she known what was in store for her, she would have voted for Mitt Romney.

Obamacare is somewhat like death; you have to pass it to see what is in it.

Actually, there is truth to that. I know someone on Medicaid who could benefit from a sleep study. Her MD told her it is not covered under zer0care.

So “many members of the creative classes . . . We are the Obama people,” said Camille Sweeney, a New York writer. Well la-te-da! You are the “creative class” huh? And you are all Obama people to boot. Enjoy your discomfort, self-inflicted if I may say. You and your ilk forced this irrational, national mess on all of us, you slime bucket elites from the vaunted coastal areas! We (the rest of America) will remember you with eternal fondness, pity and hatred.
