MEXICO CITY (AP) — A truck carrying an extremely dangerous radioactive substance has been stolen in central Mexico, the U.N. nuclear agency said Wednesday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the truck was carrying cobalt-60, used for radiotherapy treatment to combat cancer. An IAEA statement Wednesday said the truck was stolen Monday while taking the material to a radioactive waste storage center from the northern city of Tijuana.

Probably not stolen, probably dropped it off in a empty lot like they normally do so little kids with hammers and screwdrivers can break it open to smear it on their faces like blue war paint.

Cobalt-60 undergoes radioactive decay with the emission of beta particles and strong gamma radiation. It ultimately decays to non radioactive nickel. The half-life of cobalt-60 is 5.27 years. This is short enough to make isolation a useful treatment strategy for contaminated areas. In some cases, simply waiting 10 to 20 years allows for sufficient decay to make the site acceptable for use again.

It’s coming soon to an American city near us, if the conspiracy theorists are correct.

Talk about a “bright holiday season”—glowing from nuclear material is probably not what most people think of at all!

Hope it’s recovered soon, and by the proper authorities and not some nut job or some cartel with even grander intentions of evil...

Cobalt-60 has a half life of 5.27 years. It takes a very long time for it to deplete to safe levels.

This is exactly why the USA needs real border security.
But the rats in dc know none of this will affect them, so why worry?
