BREAKING: First Responder to Sandy Hook Slaughter Parked 1/4 Mile from School and Waited for Backup
TTAG ^ | 22 November, 2013 | Robert Farago

Posted on 11/22/2013 3:31:10 PM PST by marktwain

Ahead of the release of part of the official police report on the Sandy Hook Elementary School spree killing, courant.com reports that the police responding to the school did so in a less-than-timely manner. “Among the aspects of the response under scrutiny was a decision by the first responding Newtown officer to park nearly a quarter mile away at the top of the driveway to the school and wait for other officers to arrive, sources familiar with the investigation said. Those officers moved to the school on foot along the tree line . . . Dispatch records indicate the first 911 call came in just before 9:36 and the first officer arrived at the school at about 9:37:30. The dispatch tapes indicate there were officers in the school at 9:44, but don’t make clear exactly when the first officer entered.” More on that timeline . . .

One family member who requested anonymity said the report did include a timeline and that  [Danbury State's Attorney Stephen] Sedensky told them during the meeting state police and Newtown officers entered the building simultaneously . . .

The first state troopers to arrive at the school came from Troop A in Southbury. Sources with knowledge of the investigation said many of them went in the school through a door that was smashed open by members of the Statewide Narcotics Task Force on the corner of the building near the playground. Others went through the glass window that Lanza shot out. Newtown police entered through the rest of the school and the boiler room.

As we surmised, the Newtown cops did not follow active shooter protocol: enter upon arrival, locate and engage the threat with all due speed. Children died while the cops rallied.

Dispatch records indicate that about three minutes after the initial 911 call, a dispatcher told the officers that the shooting had stopped and the school was in lockdown. Within a minute of that report, the dispatcher alerted officers that teachers could hear shooting and states the “shooter is apparently still shooting in the officer area.”

We still don’t know the exact chain of events. But it’s now clear that some members of the Newtown police force arrived, waited for backup, then entered. Whether the first responding police officers could have prevented some of those deaths may be a moot point for the parents of the victims and survivors, but it’s not for those of us who have children in school.

We need to know exactly what went wrong that horrible day, so that deficiencies can be addressed and children’s lives protected. One thing’s for certain: the post-Newtown “debate” over civilian disarmament would have been different if this information had come to light soon after the shooting. As it should have.

Shame on the Connecticut police and Constitution State politicians for sacrificing children’s safety on the altar of their personal, professional and political ambitions.

and..

to shoot our dogs, and

one seems to have been there in about a minute and a half

Yes. And "almost a quarter mile" is perhaps somewhere between 300 and 400 yards, not an unreasonable distance for a reconnoiter, if you know nothing about what's going on inside.

I know virtually nothing about the entire situation. I'd like to think I would have charged in as soon as I arrived.

But I got no idea as to this guy's thinking or the info he and the other LEOs were getting.

Well lets face facts. If cops get a call for Domestic dispute between husband and wife they wait for backup.

Is it really expected to act differently when a school is being shot up?

This speaks to law enforcement training. They like having overwhelming force and are far less bold when this is not ensured.

Alexander Pope said fools rush in where Angels fear to tread.

This is the vein of one of the excuses proffered by this administration in response to the outcry over the absence of rescue relief for the 09/11/12 Benghazi victims.
To serve and protect!?
Otherwise?
any rationalization of other may well be the toughest part.

“Whatever it takes for me to go home a safe coward at the end of my shift...”

What's the point of an early retirement, a cushy pension, and a Cadillac health care plan if one risks getting shot preventing the slaughter of little kids?

This is no different than what happened at VMI years ago. The police stood around while the shooter continued to murder the students. Shameful!!

.......how do you know “he” was a “he”.........coulda been a “she” or a “part she” or a “part he”..........or “confused” on one or the other......

“officers” don’t get hired and retained for courage under fire......that’s the problem!

Special Forces around the world have recognized this scaredy cat phenomenon and started requiring its “guys” to go through the live fire house...........this definitely separates the men from the ...............”uh.........whatever!”

They knew the school was being shot up.

Did they know it was by some ONE?

If they did know it was a single gunman then the situation goes beyond cowardice and incompetence and into a complicity with evil.

I tell you truly that my purpose that day would have been to get inside that school and to the shooter(s). How I did so might have varied if I thought there were ten gunmen as opposed to one.

That being said I agree with you that I can’t understand how a man could stand at a distance hearing gunshots in a school.

Don’t think I could live with myself if I put myself above a school I know someone was shooting up.

Does it really matter how many gunman? They new kids were dying. Even if there were 2, 3, 4 or 5 gunman there is a near certainty any action would have saved the lives of children.

They want the military training, tactics, weapons, and toys but they lack the fortitude to put it on the line when it counts.

I would never argue with you about a group of armed men standing on a hillside doing nothing.

I was thinking of the first cop who got there, by himself, within a minute or so. If that were me my duty and first response would be to get close to the shooting.

I am only pointing out that if I had been told there were many gunmen, as opposed to one, I might have thought to go in slightly less directly than bursting through the main door.

I’d ask you not to think I am arguing on behalf of the men on the scene that day. I can’t begin to understand what they thought they were up to. But I know nothing of what they did, said, or reported either.

The local firefighters have more brass than the cops...

And if that sours cops here, well, tough $hit. When you look the other way for a paycheck this is the society that results. Do something about it and don’t whine about our righteous opinions.

Not surprising...Columbine deja vu all over again...

After all, LEOs are primarily being militarized in order to more efficiently storm into the homes of innocent civilians at 3 A.M. in hopes of bagging a dog, senior citizen, or, better yet, a wheel-chair-bound invalid.

Their prior success in using a tank to batter down walls and insert incendiary devices in order to incinerate dozens of children has born fruit in the ensuing years...

Dear leader is counting on them to join the (now fully armed) federal work force and the obamacare SS unit presently being recruited, as his instruments of terror when confiscation begins.
