I first heard this song the day after Thanksgiving 1964, and it took my breath away.

IIRC, he was a successful jazz pianist before he became popular as a singer. I'm so glad he started using the pipes.

IMO, he was better than either Sinatra or Crosby, and he certainly beats the hell out of anyone now performing.

Maestro, that one brings back lots of memories. Another of the Drifters hits - "Under The Boardwalk" - sticks with me for a couple of reasons. My son Daniel, who has Autism, loves it - sings along every time he hears it, which is often here on the oldies station.

On an entirely different note, for the last few years I have left work and entered the Farragut North Metro Station in D.C. and have heard on many occasions an a Capella quartet of young men singing that song while waiting for their train. They do a damn good job of it.

“IIRC, he was a successful jazz pianist before he became popular as a singer. I’m so glad he started using the pipes.”

As I remember it, he was the piano player for the quartet and someone else was the singer. One night the singer had laryngitis and could not sing. Nat King Cole sang in his place and his career took off after that one night of singing.

From November of 1964. The flip side of "The Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga Sewing Circle, Book Review and Timing Association". Far superior to that song, and one of their great haunting tunes.

Jan and Dean: "When It's Over"
