November 8, 2013 12:38 PM UC-Berkeley Students Ban Use of 'Illegal Immigrant' By Andrew Johnson
The University of CaliforniaBerkeley student government unanimously passed a resolution banning the term illegal immigrant from the bodys official discourse. The resolution is the second such measure to be passed since former Homeland Security secretary Janet Napolitano took over as president of the UC system.
The Berkeley student government showed its support for the drop the I-word campaign, deeming the term racially charged, according to the College Fix. The I word is legally inaccurate since being out of status is a civil rather than criminal infraction, the resolution reads.
Napolitanos arrival to the UC system has been met with resistance from some students, professors, and other employees because of her record on detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants. For example, at the Board of Regents approval vote in July, protesters stormed the room shouting Shame! resulting in arrests. In its resolution, the Berkeley student government claimed students live in fear of Napolitano.
The resolution offers alternative terms in place of the rejected term so as to not dehumanize people, such as undocumented, immigrants without papers, foreign nationals, or immigrants seeking status.
The one student who abstained from the 180 vote to pass the resolution said he felt it didnt accomplish anything substantive. Additionally, he said his fellow members showed disrespect when he raised some objections to the resolution by turning their backs to him as he spoke.
Via College Fix.
. . . and thereby ban precision in language.
Right. Call them dehumanized aliens.
“Makes me feel better already...”
Really; I’m sure they all slept a little better knowing they’d done their part to save the world and fight injustice.
This is what political correctness does. It bans certain language so as to further an agenda.
These people are illegal. We can discuss changing their legal status, but, the fact remains they are here illegally. We can’t state such a fact, apparently.
The term “illegal alien” was banned by the liberals years ago, because they felt that “alien” was a pejorative term.
The I word “ ?
Really?
A more precise term is “criminal alien”. I don’t suppose they’d like that one either though.
I would be happier with, “that dude on the bus being sent back to tijuana”.
I had at least one Illegal Alien in my family. One stowed away in a boat in 1795 at age 11 and came to the colonies.
OK, I'll accept that. Let's call them "uncivil aliens", then. Emphasis on "alien", of course.
There now called FUTURE DEMOCRATS. The name was changed to protect the guilty.
Just call yourselves Mexicans already and be done with it !
So we’re back to “wetback”?
I prefer the term “invading foreign force” or “foreign invaders”
Because that is the sound that a flash light make when you smack then over the head.
They are not immigrants, they are aliens. Illegal ones at that.
The article is WRONG! Violating U.S. immigration laws is a criminal offense.
