Libertarian Robert Sarvis Drew Record High Votes in Virginia
Daily Beast ^ | November 8, 2013 | by Ben Jacobs

Posted on 11/08/2013 1:17:51 PM PST by Brad from Tennessee

For the guy who finished third in the Virginia governor’s race, Robert Sarvis had a pretty good night on Tuesday. Sarvis was the Libertarian candidate in the election who pulled in just over 6.5% of the vote. This wasn’t just a landmark achievement for a third party candidate in Virginia but in the entire American South.

--------------------------------------------------------------------snip-------------------------------------------

Based on the exit polls, the average Sarvis voter was a younger, well-educated, pro-choice white who did not identify with either political party. In particular, Sarvis did well in suburban Richmond and in the Shenandoah Valley. Sarvis’s weakest areas were in coal country in southwest Virginia, where the biracial software developer from Northern Virginia struggled to get much more than three percent of the vote.

The question, which was heavily debated before, during and after the election was where Sarvis pulled his supporters from and whether his campaign drew more votes away from Democratic governor-elect Terry McAuliffe or from the socially conservative Republican, Cuccinelli. Based on the crosstabs of a CNN exit poll, it appears that statewide, Sarvis voters leaned toward McAuliffe as their second choice. However there was a lot of regional variation. . .

The only reason Yoda got so many votes was that he fooled fiscal conservatives. But they were ticked off at Bush 41 who wasn’t a true conservative and proved it almost immediately after his inauguaral.

Of course, Perot was as phoney as a three dollar bill. His entire “fortune” was made on the backs of taxpayers with his government contracts.

I held my nose in 1992 and only voted because, being from Arkansas, I knew Clinton was useless.

really don't know your history or constitution, do you? Do you really believe that the founders meant for the border of the UNITED STATES, to be left up to the states?

Yes. They are also responsible for the borders between the states.

Watch what happens if and when Texas does the right thing and secedes.

How can federal immigration policy be left to the states? Once someone’s a citizen, they’re a citizen of any state. So you can’t have one state making a decision to legalize anyone they want with the other 49 having no veto over it.

They do now. There are states issuing driver licenses to illegal immigrants and registering them to vote.

“I’m feed up with libertarians.”

Me too. They usually can’t find the book you want and their fines for overdue books are outrageous.

Virginia needed a conservative and the libertarian, funded, as I’m led to believe by de-facto obama, was not a good choice.

That was a political chess game.

That's what we get when we grant the political class unlimited power.

There may be many Dems winning with the fabled “Clintonian plurality” in the future, sadly....

Yes, and there's a relatively easy way to fix it. If no one gets a majority of the votes for a major office, have a run-off election.

Sure, there's an added expense involved, but overall it would be good for the nation.

Actually the constitution gives each state the right to determine who is a citizen of that state. This is proved, as elkfersupper says, by the fact that each state can determine who can receive a drivers license. States should(and do) have, if not full authority over their borders with other countries, enough authority to enforce not only fed law but state laws concerning immigration.

“But there are lots of ways that libertarians do not agree with the conservatives at all. In fact, they think the conservatives are as bad as dems in a few cases. Things like drug legalization, abortion, gay rights.”

This is very true. I work with a self described libertarian and we like to BS about the news. He’ll agree with me abortion is murder, and I’ll tell him I don’t care if they legalize weed as long as it is taxed hard. The gay thing is where it gets ugly. I feel almost obligated to agree to civil unions in order to get to compromise. People who think like him are turned off when I get religious.

Here’s hoping people wake up and vote for libertarian candidates until this crap stops.

The President thanks you for your outstanding contributions to Progress and Social Justice.

The only time to vote Libertarian is when the Libertarian has a chance of winning. IOW, never. Any other time, you're effectively just voting Democrat!

Always nominate and vote for the most conservative candidate who can win.

They’re doing that, but the feds still have the authority to deport any of those people. I also think other states would have grounds to sue that state if the IDs don’t make it clear the person is a non-citizen.

6% of libertarians supported higher taxes & more govt. That’s what Sarvis supported.

The only way a Libertarian will get my vote if 1. They aren’t funded by democrats 2. They actively promote fiscal conservatism and religious freedom 3. Their Republican opponent is a liberal

Sarvis was a libertarian?

Sarvis was a Libertarian, not a libertarian. He was actually a liberal hoping to siphon the votes of independents who consider themselves conservative but were too lazy to check him out. Instead, he hoped they'd fall for the Libertarian label.

He'd been polling around 10%, but only got 6.6%. So, maybe some folks wised up in time.

Maybe some of them were still passed at state republicans for giving them the choice between Romney and Ron Paul in the primary.

“So you think the Founders would have been for Open Borders, Abortion, and the Gay Agenda? “

That’s the fake progressive party that calls itself “Libertarian.”

It has little to do with “libertarian” principles, except it co-opts their words.

From the article:.....Based on the crosstabs of a CNN exit poll, it appears that statewide, Sarvis voters leaned toward McAuliffe as their second choice.

If this is true it means without Sarvis McAwful would have won by a larger margin.

Anyone who campaigns to end the Federal Reserve has my vote.

End the FED, and you kill the Progressive/Socialist nanny-state, roots and all. It can not exist without ever-increasing gov’t debt, inflation and political control of interest rates.

Do you think Obama and his Marxist fantasies would have survived one week in office without QE, and massive FED buying of Government debt?
