McAuliffe narrowly defeats Cuccinelli in Virginia, ObamaCare troubles loom over vote

Democrat Terry McAuliffe won the Virginia governor’s race on Tuesday, in a surprisingly close victory over Republican rival Ken Cuccinelli -- who was heavily outspent and trailed in the polls for much of the race. With nearly all precincts reporting, McAuliffe was ahead with just 48 percent of the vote, to Cuccinelli’s 45 percent. Though McAuliffe previously held a double-digit lead, exit polls showed voters opposed to the federal health care law overwhelmingly backed Cuccinelli, helping him narrow the gap on Tuesday.

Cuccinelli did quite well considering that he was vastly outspent and faced an establishment media campaigning for his opponent. I blame his loss on the business class’ failure to fund him.

Fact is the Libertarian Party, not the Republican Party killed whatever slim chance Cuccinelli may have had. It is a miracle that he came so close. He was runningg against one of the biggest fundraisors in the Democrat Party.

My dear I am sorry to inform you your state is becoming as blue as mine. The growth of big government in the northern DC area no doubt has contributed to these changing fortunes. In my state it it was basically changing demographic factors which turned CA so blue.

Cuccinelli had McAuliffe beat with 82% of precincts counted. The Democrats had to swing the last 12% to win. That’s an even scarier stat.

The “limited government” candidates won a majority of the votes in Virginia yesterday.

The RNC did NOTHING for Cooch. NOTHING. The Republican Establishment actively wanted him to lose.

Cuccinelli was outspent at least 10-1 and came within 2 points of winning.

Third parties help Democrats.

I'm sure the Whigs said exactly the same thing.

You can’t have a third party until you have a second one.

Mark Levin was pointing out last night that a lot of Chamber of Commerce RINOS in Virginia actually WANTED McAuliffe so he could raise taxes and begin spending the money on boondoggle projects (high speed rail) that would make them all rich.

Correct. Bill Bolling, the "moderate" Lieutenant Governor who also wanted the nomination, made a point of publicly refusing even to endorse Cuccinelli.

Bolling had been the Establishemnt's candidate. They talked about running him as an independent, like Marshall Coleman.

Exactly. They did. Third parties help Democrats.

Keep in mind the electorates in midterm elections and off year elections are decidely different than in presidential election years. In midterm and offyear elections-—it is the more dedicated and disciplined voters who show up-—generally speaking older and whiter voters-—hence more Republican. VA has been trending strongly blue in recent years and is now basically purple. However, in midterm and in off year elections the Republicans in that state can still be competitive.

"Fact is the Libertarian Party, not the Republican Party killed whatever slim chance Cuccinelli may have had. It is a miracle that he came so close. He was runningg against one of the biggest fundraisors in the Democrat Party."

You seem to be on another plane, one of complete unreality. Worse, you're resistant to education.

Robert Sarvis is not a Libertarian. Ron Paul and Rand Paul said as much when they campaigned here for Cuccinelli. Sarvis was found to be funded by an Obama donor....or "fundraisor", if you prefer.

"My dear I am sorry to inform you your state is becoming as blue as mine. The growth of big government in the northern DC area no doubt has contributed to these changing fortunes. In my state it it was basically changing demographic factors which turned CA so blue."

Dude, you're even more of a newb than I am, so can the condescending "my dear" crap. Got me?

I'm under no illusion about the condition of my state, nor have I implied such; it's just another irrelevant, rambling diversion by you which proves your ignorance of Virginia politics.

Your situation in California (and thank God Virginia isn't quite so hopeless yet) has absolutely no relevance to ours here. Can you absorb that? Yes...? Maybe....?

Nah. Probably not.

The GOP is all but useless as an institution.

Still, the people of Virginia turned out in droves to vote for a man who is as corrupt and sleazy as it comes. And elected him.

Looking back, you see the same thing with Obama, a man you wouldn’t hire to run anything, and people choose him as their president. Twice.

And Clinton, again as corrupt and sleazy as anyone ever to set foot in the White House, and people elect him and reelect him.

We’ve got a problem that goes deeper than politics and a GOP run by simple political hacks isn’t up to the challenge.

There are comparisons to be made. Both CA and VA were reliably red in presidential elections from 1952 to 1992 (with the exceception of 1964). California turned blue 1992 and has remained so ever since-—growing deeper blue with each passing year. Today we only have 15 GOP congressmen from my state-—out of 53. And the Dems control every statewide office and have overwhelming majorities in the state legislature.

I am also very famaliar with VA politics. My grandparents lived there and I still have cousins there. I have visited the state many times. I followed the gubernatorial race very closely. Unfortunately I see VA turning very blue in recent years and thought Cuccinelli had very little chance to begin with running against a big fundraisor like McAuliffe with close ties to the Clintons and a former DNC chairman himself.

I agree that the RNC wasted money in NJ to help Roly Poly. He was going to win anyways....the Dems put up a sacrificial lamb who didn’t stand a chance.

Yep. I'd bet the mortgage that Obama was in the selection process of the democrat running, insuring it was not anyone who could actually win.

Damn, this is razor close....

Which means we will lose. After the lawyers and recounts are done, and mysterious ballots produced from thin air, we lose.

“How in the world do YOU know how the all the Christians voted?”

If just a fraction of pastors and their congregations would contact their legislators and march on their State Houses to stand for truth, America would not be in these dire straights.

"You can’t have a third party until you have a second one."

Bump

When it comes to the GOP, let's look at the options we have: we can accept their moderate quisling candidates who lose national elections, or we can go for conservative candidates who will be sabotaged by the GOP.

Perhaps so, but right now, Obenshain's lead is now 1,070.
