The New York Times ^ | October 23, 2012 | Ken Belson

It took just one play on Sept. 15 to suggest the game between the Southbridge Pop Warner pee wees and their rivals, the Tantasqua Braves, could mean trouble. Two Tantasqua players were hit so hard that their coach pulled them off the field. An emergency medical technician on the sidelines evaluated the boys, grew worried that they might have concussions, and had them take their pads off.

NOT clicking on the Slimes website. Have a better link and more info? Perhaps a summation, even.

On the first play, two kids go down. After six more plays – another child goes down. There was a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. The game ended 52-0 and it is alleged that 5 kids were removed for Head Injuries (although unclear from which teams).

Idiot, Untrained ADULTS are going to allow the nanny-state even more say so when it comes to contact sports. I coached pee wee and up for 10 years and NEVER had a concussion...

And no, I wasn’t “lucky”... If you’re going to coach, do yourself, the parents and especially the kids a service and TRAIN for what you’re doing... There is NO excuse with today’s resources and materials at your fingertips...

“It went on despite the fact that the Braves, with three of their players already knocked out of the game, no longer had the required number of players to participate.”

For that many concussions, somebody was leading with the head and not the shoulders. So which team was playing dirty?

“Late last week, league officials suspended the coaches for both teams for the rest of the season. The referees who oversaw the game were barred from officiating any more contests in the Central Massachusetts Pop Warner league, and the presidents of both programs were put on probation.”

It's not going to be around in 20 years. Rush said it. American football is in crisis right now.

What are you going on about, you sodding twit? I simply asked for more information about the posting, that's it!

I think you need to go take your meds and have a nice naptime somewhere. As in for a couple of days at least.

The beginning of the end of football has already started. Very sad.

Peyton Manning said he doesn’t think boys should play tackle football until middle school. Personally, I think that is too early. Kids’ bodies and brains are still developing at that age.

Why are people in such a hurry to push kids into organized sports? Whatever happened to a bunch of kids getting together and playing baseball, football, or whatever on their own?

Many boys get burned out on team sports before they hit puberty and begin to really be able to play. These leagues are more for the parents than the kids. People seem to think if they start kids early and push them, they will all be the next Nolan Ryan or Barry Sanders. Not true. More likely they will be injured and forced to stop playing at all.

Walter Payton didn’t play football until his junior year of high school. He was in the band. Didn’t seem to hurt his career.

“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.”

There is honor, sportsmanship, & consideration of others - all far more important in life than winning a game.

There are Tebows & Incognitos. Which will die happy & which will die in despair?

The actual Vince Lombardi quote: "Winning isn't everything: making the effort to win is."

Love your homepage!

My son is now in 6th grade, and just completed his 4th year of tackle football. I've been encouraging him to focus more on basketball and baseball, but the kid simply loves football.

We just completed a winless season, but I couldn't be more proud of his team. They played hard every game, and never gave up, even though they were playing against teams that had played together 3-4 years.

His coaches did the absolute best they could, and did an excellent job on coaching the proper technique. There were a few injuries, but no concussions this year.

I have one rule for my son: once I write the check, there's no quitting. In 4 years, that's never been a problem. The only "push" I've been giving him is in the form of protein shakes, to try and put a few more pounds on him. He held his own while blocking kids 25-40 pounds heavier than his 90 pounds, though.

Three of our grandsons play flag football (too young for tackle), and the middle one is small for his age but runs like lightning. I doubt football will be his sport, though, when it comes to the next level. He’s not built for it.

All 3 of them love it, though.

As a sports bonus, I’ve convinced the youngest to be a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. :-)

Yep. It'll be gradual though. First, no more pee wee football. Then high school......
