A Greek appeal for help in identifying the girl has triggered a global outpouring of sympathy and tips -- over 8,000 calls so far -- but no concrete breakthroughs, authorities said Monday.
Greek police on the case are investigating everything from a potential link with child trafficking rings to a welfare scam or even simple charity as they seek the
The Greek appeal follows the discovery last week of the girl in a Gypsy settlement in central Greece during a police raid looking for drugs, firearms and fugitives. The blond, blue-eyed child was strikingly unlike the couple she lived with, which triggered the curiosity of the police. A DNA test proved that "Maria," as the child was called, was not related to the Gypsy couple she was living with.
A 39-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman appeared Monday before an investigating judge to face criminal charges of child abduction, which carries a maximum ten-year prison sentence.
Police allege the woman claimed to have given birth to six children in less than 10 months, while 10 of the 14 children the couple had registered as their own are unaccounted for.
It is unclear whether these all exist, or are fake declarations of parenthood to milk the Greek welfare system. Police say the two suspects received about 2,500 euros ($3,420) a month in subsidies from three different cities where they had registered the children.
Roma, a poor people in a country devastated by an economic crisis, try to make a living on the outskirts of Farsala by selling fruits, carpets, blankets, baskets and shoes. They are already stereotyped by some in Greece and elsewhere in Europe as social outcasts, thieves and beggars -- and now fear they will be stigmatized as child traffickers as well.

Gee, why would anyone think that?
Indeed. Haven’t gypsies always been known for stealing children?
A sad event for sure, and one that I am sure plays out many many times the world over, including the U.S.
So the stories about Gypsies stealing children are true?
I knew a Roma family kid when I was growing up- EVERYPLACE we went he was sticking stuff in his pockets. It did not matter what, if he came home at the end of the day without stuff he got into trouble.
An ashtray, a pen, napkin dispenser, toilet paper roll and much worse too if any money was left anywhere near him by anyone
Isn’t that profiling to say that the child doesn’t look like her gypsy parents?
I guess Hitler didn’t get them all.
genetic testing takes a very short time these days. I assume they tested the kid because of her obvious differences then found out that she was not related to the perps. Besides, this is Greece, I do not know if they have a profiling thing there....
Whenever I read of a story like this, I think of that incident.
I’m sure that if her parents sold her that they won’t be calling the police to claim her now, nor will any parent that failed to report her missing.
The fact that no one has come forth to claim her with all this publicity might very well indicate that the gypsies did in fact buy her as they claim.
Sounds like my sister’s experience as a L&D nurse. She said that when a Gypsy arrived in labor, they had to clear a L&D room of all supplies and just bring in what they needed for each check. If not, the family would take all of the medical supplies.
“. I assume “
Don’t assume. Read the article.
A number of years ago, there was a magazine article about gypsies, I think in the National Geographic. The guy writing it was very sympathetic to them and tried to get their story. He met with some teenagers to do just that and... well... they mugged him.
He also wrote that the people he had met who were of Roma background but had left them behind had nothing good to say about them and were very reticent about admitting their background.
Not all cultures are equal. I wonder what an biologist would say about how/why this group interacts this way with the rest of the human species.
Lots of gypsies and lots of blondes in the Ukraine - only a days drive away and close by boat.

Maybe it’s Madeleine McCann.
Yeah, considering when I grew up, I was often threatened (tongue-in-cheek of course - at least I think it was) with being sold to the Gypsies. That, or the next circus to travel through.
It is because their culture doesn’t push their children to success beyond their own. That is why the culture is degenerate.
Ages don’t match
